# Learn Basuri — First sound

# First sound

If you cannot get a tone yet, you are normal. It can take days or weeks of short daily tries before the embouchure clicks. No shortcuts — only calm experiments.

Do **not** blow harder when nothing comes out. Harder air makes hiss, not music. Softer and more focused wins.

Hear a real bansuri long tone at your Sa on [first-sound.html](first-sound.html), then hunt that colour.
Full plan: [practice routine](routine.html).

      ## Warm up without the flute

        - Sit or stand tall. Shoulders soft. Breathe into the belly, not puffed cheeks.

        - Blow on hot tea — a thin, steady stream. That is the shape you want.

        - In a mirror: lips form a small oval about the size of a drinking-straw opening.

      ## Straw drill

Teachers often use a straw before bamboo:

          - Hold a thin straw gently between relaxed lips — do not bite.

          - Blow slow, even air. Cheeks stay flat.

          - Aim across the edge of your other palm — feel where air hits.

          - Nudge the angle up or down. Notice how direction changes.

When that stream is steady, aim it across the bansuri blowing edge the same way.

      ## Kiss-and-roll

          - Press lips gently together.

          - Kiss the flute so the blowing hole is against the lips; feel the near edge on the middle of the lower lip.

          - Roll the flute away about a quarter turn so the hole faces more toward the ceiling — lower lip still covers a little of the near rim.

          - Blow a soft whistle-stream *across* the far edge, not straight down the tube.

      ## On the flute — first tone

        - Leave finger holes open at first (fingers hovering). Less to leak.

        - Support so the flute does not wobble.

        - Blow 3–5 seconds. Listen for any pitch under the air noise.

        - Micro-adjust: roll in/out, slide on the lip, change aperture — one change at a time.

        - When a tone appears, hold it. Do not add fingers yet.

Higher notes later need a *smaller* aperture and faster air — not simply louder blowing.

      ## No sound? Checklist

          - Air into the hole instead of across the edge → roll out slightly.

          - Lips too wide → smaller oval.

          - Cheeks puffed → reset; support from the belly.

          - Flute shaking → stabilize before fingering.

          - Only two frustrated minutes → stop; try again tomorrow.

          - Still stuck after a week of short daily tries → have a player watch your angle once.
