# Learn Piano — Theory and Practice

> **Where the name comes from.** The piano was invented around **1700** by **Bartolomeo Cristofori**
> at the Medici court in Florence. Unlike the harpsichord (one fixed volume), his hammers could hit
> the strings softly *or* loudly with your touch, so he called it *gravicembalo col piano e forte* —
> "harpsichord with **soft and loud**," later shortened to **piano**. Early instruments had ~54 keys;

## What you do here

1. **Keyboard** — find Middle C (C4); click keys to hear scientific pitch names. **Black-key map:**
   black keys come in groups of **2** and **3**; **C** is just left of any group of 2, **F** just
   left of any group of 3. Each octave (A–G repeated) is exactly **double the frequency** (A4 =
   440 Hz, A5 = 880 Hz); an octave holds **12** evenly tuned half steps (equal temperament).
2. **Scales** — a **major scale** is W–W–H–W–W–W–H (C major = all white keys C–C, bright); a
   **natural minor scale** is W–H–W–W–H–W–W (A minor = all white keys A–A, darker; same notes as
   C major but started on A, its relative minor). Pick root, major/natural-minor, and **Both hands /
   Right / Left**, then press **Play the scale** to watch the keys light up in time on a
   **three-octave** keyboard (with finger numbers on the keys). In *Both hands* the left hand plays
   the **low octave** (fingers shown in blue) and the right hand the **high octave** (fingers in
   gold), with one empty octave between them so the two registers read as clearly separate. Click any
   key to hear it. To have the app *listen and check what you play* (one note or hands together), use

   hand/coordination guidance (right alone → left alone → together). **Recommended major order:** C first, then G → D → A → E
   (circle of fifths, same fingering), then F, then the black-key scales last. **Natural-minor
   order:** A minor first (relative minor of C, all white keys), then E → D → G → C minor (same
   fingering), black-key minors last. Sources:

   The W–W–H… formula is **movable** — start it on any note for that key's major scale. *Why bother?*
   A scale is the palette a piece paints from, and walking the
   [**circle of fifths**](circle-of-fifths.md) (C → G → D → A…) adds one sharp per step (the other way
   adds flats). **Two fingering rules that hold across every scale on the page:** (a) the **thumb (1)
   always lands on a white key** during a thumb-tuck — never a black key; (b) **white-key roots** start
   with finger **1** (RH) / **5** (LH), while **black-key roots** start with **2** or **3** (a couple of
   left-hand starts use 4).
3. **Sight reading** — a short teaser only; the full clef reference, the **dynamics & tempo** markings,
   and progressive drills live on [`reading.md`](reading.md) / [Sight reading](reading.html).
4. **Chords** — what a chord is (notes sounded together = harmony); how a triad is the major scale's
   1st/3rd/5th, labeled by scale degree (major R+3+5, minor R+♭3+5, diminished R+♭3+♭5, augmented
   R+3+♯5). A **scale degree** is a note's position number in the scale (C=1, D=2 … B=7); the Roman
   numeral names the *chord* built on that degree. **Harmonizing** a scale = building a triad on every
   degree using only that scale's notes; do it to C major (i.e. "chords come from a scale") and you get
   its family: I C, ii Dm, iii Em, IV F, V G, vi Am, vii° B° — with tap-to-hear buttons. The quality
   pattern (I/IV/V major, ii/iii/vi minor, vii° diminished) is the same in every major key. Also covers
   inversions and the I–vi–IV–V starter loop. *Major vs minor* comes down to the **third** (bright
   major 3rd vs wistful minor 3rd); consonant intervals form simple frequency ratios (octave 2:1,
   perfect fifth 3:2 — [Pythagorean tuning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_tuning)).
5. **Ear training** — pools from C D E up to chromatic.
6. **Practice that sticks** — go slow first, chunk it, hands separate then together, keep sessions
   short and frequent, and **interleave/space** your practice (mixing and revisiting beats drilling one

## Build any scale from the 12 notes

Every key — white *and* black — is one **half step** from its neighbour, so one octave is
**12 half steps** (the chromatic scale):

Read the formula as moves: **W** (whole step) = up **2** half steps (skip a key); **H** (half step)
= up **1** (the next key). Starting on **C** with **W–W–H–W–W–W–H**:

The whole steps skip every black key, so C major = all white keys **C D E F G A B C**. Start the same
pattern elsewhere and the black keys pitch in — e.g. **G major** needs **F#** (G A B C D E F# G) to keep
the W–W–H–W–W–W–H shape, which is why it "has one sharp." Natural minor uses **W–H–W–W–H–W–W**.

## Working the scales

The Scales section has two distinct modes on a dedicated keyboard that mirrors the main one:

- **Play the scale** (learn): every scale key lights up and stays lit while the scale
  plays smoothly (legato) top to bottom — **one note per beat at the metronome's tempo**, so set
  the BPM in the bottom bar to speed it up or slow it down. Just watch and listen; no input needed.
- **Practice the scale** (play along): only the **next** key lights up. The app plays that
  note and **waits** for you to match it by **clicking the key**. Wrong note?
  It stays on the same step, tells you what you played vs. what's wanted, and replays the
  target — so you can't advance until it's right. It reports slips at the end. **Stop practice**
  returns to the reference view.
- Fingerings are shown for the common keys (all white-key majors, F/Bb/Eb/Ab/Db major, and
  A/E/D natural minor); other keys still guide you note-by-note without numbers.

## Training routines

Short, guided workouts — scales, arpeggios, chords and progressions — that walk you through
**one step at a time**, lighting up the next note, listening to what you play, and only advancing
when you're right. They now live on their own page:

## Metronome

A **metronome** is pinned to the bottom of the page so it stays
visible on every section — start slow, lock the notes, then raise the tempo. It has a Start/Stop
button, a **typeable tempo** box (40–208 BPM, with −/+ buttons), a **volume** slider (remembered
between visits, drag to 0 to mute), and a **Beats** selector covering
simple (2/4, 3/4, 4/4), compound (6/8, 9/8, 12/8) and **odd/irregular** meters
(5/4, 5/8, 7/8, 7/4, 9/8, 11/8). Odd/compound meters are grouped (e.g. 7/8 = 2+2+3):
the **downbeat** gets the strongest click, each **group start** a medium accent, and other beats a
soft click. A row of beat dots — spaced to show the grouping — lights through each measure.
The **bottom number matters**: the tempo box is read as the quarter note, so an eighth-note beat
(a `/8` meter) ticks **twice as fast** as the same numerator on a `/4` meter — e.g. at the same BPM,
5/8 clicks twice as quickly as 5/4. The teaching pages for those fractions and the notes that fill them are

> **Do Western meters have names like Eastern taals?** Mostly no. A few have nicknames — 4/4 is
> "common time" (the **C** symbol), 2/2 is "cut time / alla breve", 3/4 is a "waltz", 2/4 a
> "march", and 6/8 is "compound duple" — but there's no rich named system like Eastern *taals*
> (Rupak, Teental, Jhaptaal…) or Carnatic *talas*. Western players just say the fraction and,
> for odd meters, the **grouping** (7/8 as "2+2+3").
