# Break rut

When island, folk, and fingerpicking are honest but the hands still play yesterday’s shapes, these **eight loop cells** are the reset. Pick *one*, loop until the motion is a twitch, then stop. No target tempo — the click is a floor, not a race.

**Technique path:** [Drills](drills.md) · [Exercises](exercises.md) · [Island](strumming.md) / [Folk](drills-folk.md) / [Fingerpicking](fingerstyle.md) first · this page when stale

The HTML page has pedagogy, TAB (**A on top**, GCEA — [Foundations · TAB](foundations.md)), and Play. Models are slow loops so you can hear the join before you speed up.

**Not transcriptions.** Jobs: uneven island, mute / ghost strums, campanella rolls, thumb independence, short chord-melody cells. No sweep, gallop, or tapping.

## How to use it

1. Hands already awake — chromatic or spider first ([Exercises](exercises.md)).
2. Pick **one** cell. Loop 2–4 minutes.
3. Press Play once — match the model, then drift faster only when it is a twitch.
4. When it is a twitch, stop.

## Suggested order

### Three tracks

- **Beginner** — uneven island and ghost &s only. Hold C. Stay near 60.
- **Intermediate** — mute chick, campanella, thumb independence.
- **Advanced** — thumb vs fingers, then one chord-melody cell. One cell a day.

## Uneven island

Island D–DU–UDU with beat 3 held (no up on 3&): D–DU–D–DU on **C**.

## Ghost &s

Downs ring; every & is a left-hand mute (ghost **x**). Hold C.

## Mute chick

Bass rings on 1 and 3; chicks on 2 and 4 are muted. Hold **G**. See also [Folk · dead chick](drills-folk.md).

## Campanella roll

Cascade open G–C–E–A and reverse; let each note ring over the last.

## Thumb independence

Thumb on open G every beat; i / m on E and A on the offs.

## Thumb vs fingers

Thumb quarters on C; A-string cell 0–2–3 that does not lock to every thumb hit.

## Chord-melody cell

C then Am: thumb bass + short A-string melody (chord tones only).

## Chord-melody fill

G → C → G fills on the A string under the chord — no mid-bar strum.

## Practice note

**How long:** 8–10 minutes. One wake-up, **one** cell, then [Play along](songs.md) or [Improv](improv.md).

**Listen for:** ring vs mute, overlapping campanella, a steady thumb.

**Common mistake:** stacking all eight in one sitting.
