Muting & ghost notes
Bass strings ring forever if you let them. Clean metal and funk both start with controlled silence.
Ghost-note lab
Three cells built from real notes and ghosts. The loud, longer steps are pitched notes;
the quiet, clipped ones are the ghosts, printed as x. Pitches used are
open E (E1) and its fifth B on the A string at fret 2;
the rake cell drags across the open D and A strings.
Why silence matters
On bass, an unmuted open string under a fretted riff turns every part into mush. Distortion / overdrive on the amp makes the problem louder, not clearer.
- Definition — listeners hear attacks, not a continuous fog.
- Groove — rests and ghosts are rhythmic events, as real as pitched notes.
- Mix — guitars already fill midrange; bass needs clean low punches.
Left-hand mute
Lay unused fretting fingers lightly across strings you are not playing. Lift just enough that the note you want speaks; keep neighbors dead. This is more critical on bass than on ukulele nylon.
- When fretting on A, the underside of a fretting finger or a spare fingertip can kiss the E string dead.
- Keep the left hand “wide” — floating fingers ready to mute, not curled into a fist.
- After a shift, re-establish mutes before the next dense rhythm.
Right-hand / palm mute
Side of the palm near the bridge shortens sustain (guitarists know this; on bass it also thickens gallops). Thumb can mute lower strings while fingers play higher ones.
- Light palm — shortens decay without killing fundamental.
- Thumb mute — park on E while playing A/D/G lines.
- Follow mute — after a pluck, a free finger rests on the string to choke it (useful before rests).
Ghost notes
Dead, pitched-less plucks written as x in TAB. They keep the right hand moving so the groove never stops —
essential between roots in funk and as “filler” 16ths around gallop accents.

Left hand frets lightly (or lays flat) so no clear pitch speaks; right hand still uses full i–m motion. If a ghost “blooms” into a pitch, press less with the left hand or mute more strings.
Rakes
Drag across muted strings into a target note. Adds aggression without changing harmony — common in metal intros and fills.

Keep the rake quieter than the target pitch so the ear lands on the real note.
Open-string drones vs mute (intentional ring)
Metal bass often uses open-string drones under fretted shapes — that is intentional ring, not a mistake. The skill is choosing which string may ring.
- Allow open E to ring while fretting a root on A — classic drone texture.
- Mute D and G hard so the drone does not become a chord wash.
- Practice “drone on / drone off” as a switch, not as accidental noise.
Common faults
- Choked target notes — mute hand too heavy on the speaking string.
- Half-mute ghosts — pitch leaks through; sounds like a mistake, not a ghost.
- Only muting after the buzz — mute must be ready before the pluck.
- Palm killing lows — too much palm pressure turns E into cardboard.

Why a bass rings longer than a guitar
This is not a discipline problem you can practise away — it is the instrument. A bass string is longer, much heavier, and under more tension than a guitar string, so one pluck puts far more energy into it and that energy takes longer to leak out. The low notes are also the ones a room hangs on to: bass frequencies bounce off walls and floors and come back at you, which is why a note that feels finished under your hands is still filling the track.
Two consequences worth planning around:
- You will always be later than you think. By the time you hear that a note is over-ringing, it has already been in the mix for a beat. The mute has to be planned, not reactive.
- The problem gets worse as you go lower. Habits you got away with on the D and G strings will not survive on the E string, and they certainly will not survive a down-tuned low string — see Tunings.
None of which is a reason to fear sustain. Long notes are a real choice, and a drone you chose is a texture. The point is that on bass, silence costs work and sustain is free — the opposite of how most beginners assume it works.
The mute is a rhythm event
Most players practise the attack and let the release happen whenever. That is why their rests are approximate. Fix it by giving the mute its own place in the count: not “play the note and then stop it”, but “note on 1, mute on the ‘and’ of 1”. Two events, both on the grid, both of them yours.
Practise it as a two-handed rhythm on one pitch:
- Set the lab to the first cell and play along, but ignore the ghosts — instead, use each “and” as the moment you kill the note. You are now playing the same rhythm the lab plays, with silence where it has ghosts.
- Move the mute to the “a” of the beat. The note is now three-quarters as long, evenly, every time. If it is not even, your release is still reacting rather than counting.
- Then put the ghosts back in. A ghost is just a mute you plucked — which is why these two skills are one skill and why they live on the same page.
The tell that it has landed: your rests all sound like the same length. Uneven rests are the most common reason a technically correct part still feels sloppy.
Muting under gain
With amp overdrive (or a driven DI), every idle string becomes a chord you did not ask for. Practice the same groove clean, then with mild drive — mute standards must rise with gain.
- Clean pass: mark any ringing neighbor.
- Driven pass: those neighbors scream — fix left-hand mute first, then palm.
- Return to clean and keep the stricter mute habit.
Ghost streams (16ths)
Hold a fretted pitch lightly so it will not speak; stream i–m 16ths as ghosts for one bar, then land a clear root on the next downbeat.

If the stream sprouts pitch, lighten the left hand. If it is only air, dig a little more with the right.
Hearing a mute you cannot hear
Muting is the one technique you cannot judge from the playing position. Your hands are on the instrument, the body is against you, and you are listening to the notes you meant to play. Three ways to get an outside opinion, cheapest first:
- Play at a whisper. Turn the amp down until the notes are barely there. Ringing you were masking with volume becomes the loudest thing in the room.
- Listen only to the gaps. Play four bars of the lab's second cell and pay attention to nothing but beats 2 and 4. Deciding in advance what you are listening for is what makes this work — a general “does that sound clean?” never catches anything.
- Record it and turn the mids up. Open-string ring lives in the low mids. Boosting that range on playback makes a halo obvious that was inaudible while you played.
Then do it again with drive on, which is the same test with the difficulty raised — Muting under gain.
