A drone through speakers reaches the mic, and a tanpura holding Sa is easy to mistake for you singing it. While the drone is on, a steady tone on Sa is ignored and your own Sa still reads — it moves and breathes, a drone doesn't. Headphones keep the drone out of the mic altogether.
