Classical exercises

Thumb (p), index (i), middle (m), ring (a). Plant before you play. These are gym-length pima cards; the full method lives on Classical drills.

Technique path: Drills · Exercises · this page

Each card has pedagogy, TAB (high e on top — see Foundations · TAB), and Play. One model at a time; Play becomes Stop. Tempo follows the metronome.

Sources (two-check): Carcassi / Sor / Giuliani for pima and planted arpeggios · Hal Leonard first-position reading. Pair a card with a short study from Method books on the Exercises hub.

  4. Walking thumb.
  5. Independence seed.

Beginner

i–m on open e. Then plant p–i–m–a once, slowly.

Advanced

Classical · pima

Plant before you play. Full method: Classical drills. Travis seed (folk door into fingers): Folk exercises.

i–m on open e

Index and middle take turns on the high e string. Never the same finger twice. This pair does most scale work for the rest of your life.

Plant p–i–m–a

Set each finger on the string, then play open Em seats p–i–m–a. Planting kills the buzz; later plant the next finger as the current one plays.

e|-----------0----- a
B|--------0-------- m
G|-----0----------- i
E|-0--------------- p

Carcassi and Sor studies assume this habit.

p–i–m–i over Em

Thumb on the bass, i and m on the treble; i returns. Hold Em. a stays out. Same family as Giuliani’s patterns.

G|-----0-----0----- i

Walking thumb on basses

Thumb walks open E–A–D–A. Fingers stay planted lightly on the treble. Thumb does not wander onto the treble strings.

D|--------0-------
A|-----0-----0----
E|-0-------------- p

Independence seed

Thumb plays a bass note on every click while i and m alternate on the off-beats. Two rhythms, one hand. Start absurdly slow — this is coordination, not speed.

Practice note

How long: 8–10 minutes. Two on i–m, four on one arpeggio pattern, two on independence at half tempo.

Listen for: even volume between fingers, and no buzz after planting.

Then deepen: Classical drills (pattern library, rest-stroke, first pieces). Pair with method-book doors (Sor / Carcassi / Giuliani).
