Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| a (अ) | vowel | the short a (अ). First letter of the list. |
| i (इ) | vowel | the short i (इ). |
| u (उ) | vowel | the short u (उ). |
| ṇ (ण्) | it marker | not a letter of the abbreviation. An it (इत्) marks where a name can end. This ṇ (ण्) is dropped when the name is used. |
The phrases
Three vowels, then a marker. The name aṇ (अण्) normally ends at the second ṇ (ण्), the one after la (ल) in 6. It covers all the vowels with ha ya va ra la (ह य व र ल), as in 1.1.69 aṇudit savarṇasya (अणुदित् सवर्णस्य). It means only a i u (अ इ उ) in the single rule 1.1.51 ur aṇ raparaḥ (उरण् रपरः). अण् प्रायः दोस्रो ण् मा, अर्थात् लण् मा, टुङ्गिन्छ, र ह य व र ल सहित सबै स्वर समेट्छ, जस्तै १.१.६९ अणुदित् सवर्णस्य मा। १.१.५१ उरण् रपरः भन्ने एउटै सूत्रमा मात्र यसको अर्थ अ इ उ हो।
Sanskrit in this line
The marker is recited with a halant, ṇ (ण्), because it is not the syllable ṇa (ण). The three vowels are the letters that stay.
Say it back
Say the three vowels, and say where aṇ (अण्) normally ends.
