Smooth glides (meend)

Meend is a continuous slide from one swara to another — through all the pitch in between, like a fretless glide. No steps, no bumps: one unbroken line of sound. Practice slowly; keep the throat open and the volume even.

A · Core meend paths

Sa ⟿ Pa  ·  Pa ⟿ Sa  ·  Sa ⟿ Sa

Sa ⟿ Ga (1→3)  ·  Ga ⟿ Pa (3→5)  ·  Ga ⟿ Sa

Take 2–4 seconds each way. Match the demo by ear: if you hear steps, slow down. SOVT lip trills and the “ng” siren are training wheels — same swoop on an easy sound first.

B · Neighbour glides

Short connected slides between adjacent swaras — the building blocks of longer meend.

Re ⟿ Ga  ·  Ga ⟿ Re  ·  Ma ⟿ Pa  ·  Pa ⟿ Ma

C · Glide practice ladder

  1. Hum a slow Sa ⟿ Pa ⟿ Sa (lips closed).
  2. Same path on ng or lip trill, then open to aa.
  3. Neighbour glides along Bilawal: Sa⟿Re, Re⟿Ga… up and down.
  4. Triad path: Sa ⟿ Ga ⟿ Pa (and back), still one connected line per segment.
  5. Only then try the octave glide Sa ⟿ Sȧ — light, no squeeze.

Rule: pitch moves gradually; volume stays calm. If the throat tightens, return to SOVT sirens.

OrnamentWhat it is
Kantiny grace note just before the main swara
Andolanslow gentle oscillation around one swara
Murkifast light cluster of 2–4 notes
Khatkashort sharp cluster — snappier than murki
Gamakheavy forceful oscillation (dhrupad)

Volume swells

A volume swell changes loudness on a steady pitch — breath and support move the dynamics; the swara does not wobble. Classical riyaz uses this for control (similar idea to Western messa di voce: soft → loud → soft). Keep the tanpura on; match pitch first, then shape the wave.

A · Three shapes

ShapeWhat to doFeel
Crescendo Start almost whisper-soft; grow to a clear full tone More air support, not throat squeeze
Decrescendo Start clear; fade to soft without losing pitch or going breathy-collapse Steady core; taper the end
Soft → loud → soft One breath: swell up, peak in the middle, swell down Even curve; peak is still easy, never shouted

Crescendo on Sa  ·  Decrescendo on Sa  ·  Soft → loud → soft

The demos are a volume guide on a fixed pitch (you will hear the loudness rise and fall). Match that shape with your voice — pitch locked to the drone. Click ▶ again to stop.

B · Swell practice (≈5 min)

  1. Sa only: 4 breaths crescendo, 4 decrescendo, 4 soft–loud–soft. Jaw loose; if pitch dips when soft, add a little more support (not volume).
  2. 1 · 3 · 5: one soft–loud–soft on Sa, then Ga, then Pa (▶ demos below). Stay on aa or hum.
  3. Combine: glide Sa ⟿ Pa at steady volume, then hold Pa and swell soft–loud–soft — pitch glide and volume wave as separate skills first.
  4. Never push the peak into strain. Soft and clear beats loud and tight.

Wave on Sa (1)  ·  Wave on Ga (3)  ·  Wave on Pa (5)

Optional: after a clean wave on Sa, open the same swell on ee and oo — same pitch, different vowel. Dynamics should survive the vowel change.
