Śiva Sūtra / Śāmbhavopāya (शाम्भव) / 1.2
1.2
ज्ञानं बन्धः jñānaṃ bandhaḥ
The line
Knowing is bondage.
नेपालीमा
ज्ञान नै बन्ध हो।
Where it sits
The same two words return at 3.2. Kṣemarāja (क्षेमराज) reads this first jñāna (ज्ञान) as the knowing that fails to rest in the self of 1.1, and the later one as the knowing that belongs to the mind of 3.1. The sūtras (सूत्र) print the same sentence twice. bandhaḥ (बन्धः) from this line is still available for 1.3.
Split: jñānam (ज्ञानम्) + bandhaḥ (बन्धः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| jñānam (ज्ञानम्) | nominative singular, neuter | knowing. |
| bandhaḥ (बन्धः) | nominative singular, masculine | bondage, a binding. |
The phrases
Two nominatives again. Knowing is bondage. The line does not say which knowing. 1.1 has just said that consciousness is the self.
Sanskrit in this line
The anusvāra (अनुस्वार) of jñānam (ज्ञानम्) is written jñānaṃ (ज्ञानं) before b (ब्). The visarga of bandhaḥ (बन्धः) stays, because the line ends.
Say it back
Say the two words, then say which line repeats them.
