Viṃśatikā / All 22 verses / 14

The line

Oneness does not fit whatever has a division by directions. How, otherwise, do shadow and covering come to be? And if there is no lump, those two do not belong to it.

Where it sits

Verses 12 to 14 refuse the partless atom and the heap. Verse 15 will refuse the opposite rescue, that the object is one single whole.

Split: dig-bhāga-bhedaḥ (दिग्-भाग-भेदः) + yasya (यस्य) + asti (अस्ति) + tasya (तस्य) + ekatvam (एकत्वम्) + na (न) + yujyate (युज्यते) + chāyā-āvṛtī (छाया-आवृती) + katham (कथम्) + vā (वा) + anyaḥ (अन्यः) + na (न) + piṇḍaḥ (पिण्डः) + cet (चेत्) + na (न) + tasya (तस्य) + te (ते)

The phrases

If a thing has an east face and a west face, it is not one partless thing. Shadow and covering need that difference of face: one side in the light, one side blocked. If you deny the lump that could have faces, shadow and covering have nothing to belong to.

This is the visible version of verse 12. You can see that a cover blocks one side.

Sanskrit in this line

A dual, chāyāvṛtī (छायावृती) and again te (ते), keeps shadow and covering as a pair with one argument. cet (चेत्) marks the if-clause na piṇḍaḥ (न पिण्डः).
