Economy picking — join at the string change

Economy picking is how you run long scale shapes (especially 3 notes per string) without string-hopping: alternate on one string, then at a string change take the shortest path. That repeated direction is the join (= on the RH / X rows) — intentional, not a mistake.

Technique path: Alternate first · this page · Economy lab · Scales / Modes · Sweep for chord-tone outlines

What this module trains: hear and feel the join without smearing like a strum. On one string you still alternate. Across strings you may get two downs (or two ups) in a row — that is the point when a scale wants to keep climbing.

TAB footers match Alternate: LH, RH (D=/U= marks joins), X (= join, o/i crossings when not joining), note names.

Scales job — why economy exists

Economy is the picking design for 3NPS major and mode shapes: odd notes on a string let the pick continue into the next string (a join). That is how scalar runs cover the neck without fighting the alternate clock.

  • 3NPS cells here are scale fragments: D–G–B–e frets are the same family you open fully on Scales / Modes — say the note names while you join.
  • Odd continue / even turn: engineer the scale line (3+2+3, U-turn) so joins appear where the melody goes, not by accident.
  • 2→4→6: grow one scale shape across the neck the same way Alternate does for pentatonics.
  • Lab: Economy lab · Scale shape defaults to 3NPS — A/B with Alternate on the same map. When the line becomes chord tones only, graduate to Sweep.
Order: hear alt vs econ on open G–B–e → ascending / descending joins → progressive 3NPS and 2NPS (2→4→6 strings) with 3-string as the mid step → U-turn → fives → into a three-string rake → six-string ascending → engineer 3+2+3 → descending 3NPS from e. Rest-stroke length across adjacent strings continues on Sweep.
4/4 updowns: multi-string updown cells repeat the peak so the length is even (friendly for bars of 4/4) — same convention as Alternate.
Odd continue / even turn: odd notes on a string keep the pick moving the same way into the next string (a join). Even notes reverse the stroke at the change — same as alternate would. That is the Gambale job (engineering the line), not a copied etude book.
Sources (two-check): Guitar World economy / directional picking consensus · Guitar Nine “economy demystified” (join at the change, alternate between). Start from Alternate so the join is a choice, not a crutch.
