Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā / 1.68 Practice, and the mere reading

1.68

Haṭha (हठ) Yoga Pradīpikā (प्रदीपिका)

क्रियायुक्तस्य सिद्धिः स्यादक्रियस्य कथं भवेत् ।
न शास्त्रपाठमात्रेण योगसिद्धिः प्रजायते
kriyāyuktasya siddhiḥ syād akriyasya kathaṃ bhavet |
na śāstrapāṭhamātreṇa yogasiddhiḥ prajāyate

The line

Success belongs to the one who is joined to the practice. The verse asks how it would belong to one without the practice, and it says success in yoga is not born from the mere recitation of a śāstra (शास्त्र).

Where it sits

The na (न) is the verse's own. 1.69 says the same of costume and of talk.

Split: kriyā (क्रिया) + yuktasya (युक्तस्य) siddhiḥ (सिद्धिः) syād (स्याद्) akriyasya (अक्रियस्य) kathaṃ (कथं) bhavet (भवेत्) / na (न) śāstra (शास्त्र) + pāṭha (पाठ) + mātreṇa (मात्रेण) yoga (योग) + siddhiḥ (सिद्धिः) prajāyate (प्रजायते)

The quarters run 16, 16 syllables. A hyphen in the split is a compound joint, a teaching mark, and the voice joins it.

Say it back

Cover the English and say the verse in one sentence. Success belongs to the one who is joined to the practice. The verse asks how it would belong to one without the practice, and it says success in yoga is not born from the mere recitation of a śāstra (शास्त्र).
