Keyboard & scales lab

A calm path: know the keyboard, connect sound to names, build scales and chords, then train your ear. Everything here is interactive — click, listen, and (if you have a keyboard) play along.

Where the name comes from. The piano was invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori at the Medici court in Florence. Harpsichords could only pluck at one fixed volume, so he built one whose hammers could strike the strings softly or loudly depending on your touch, and called it the gravicembalo col piano e forte — “harpsichord with soft and loud.” We shortened that to piano. His early instruments had about 54 keys; a modern piano has 88. (Sources: The Met, Britannica.)
Sit tall, wrists loose, shoulders soft. Five focused minutes beat thirty distracted ones.

The keyboard

Middle C (C4) sits near the center of a full piano — MIDI note 60. White keys are the natural notes; black keys are sharps/flats.

Never get lost: the black-key map

The black keys run in repeating groups of two and three. That pattern is your map for finding any note instantly:

  • C is the white key just to the left of any group of two black keys.
  • F is the white key just to the left of any group of three black keys.

The seven letters A B C D E F G then repeat all the way up. Each repeat is an octave — and an octave up is exactly double the frequency (concert A is 440 Hz; the A above it is 880 Hz). The gap to the very next key — white or black — is a half step; skip one and it's a whole step. There are 12 half steps in an octave, tuned evenly (“equal temperament”), which is why every key sounds in tune no matter where you start.

Scales

A major scale uses the step pattern W–W–H–W–W–W–H (whole, whole, half…). From C that is all white keys: C D E F G A B C — bright and happy.

A natural minor scale uses the pattern W–H–W–W–H–W–W. From A that is all white keys: A B C D E F G A — darker and sadder. (It's the same notes as C major, just started on A — its relative minor.)

Here's the magic: the W–W–H–W–W–W–H formula is movable. Start it on any note and you get that note's major scale — the same bright sound, just higher or lower. That single pattern is how you play in every key.

Why bother with scales? A scale is the palette a piece paints from — its melody and chords are almost all drawn from those seven notes. Learn the scale and the music falls under your fingers. Walk the circle of fifths (C → G → D → A…) and each new key adds exactly one sharp; go the other way for flats. Dig deeper in the circle of fifths, Modes and Beyond scales.

Build any scale from the 12 notes

Every key — white and black — is one half step from the key right next to it. Go all the way up and you pass through 12 half steps before the letters repeat (the chromatic scale):

C · C♯ · D · D♯ · E · F · F♯ · G · G♯ · A · A♯ · B · (C)

Read the formula as a set of moves: W (whole step) = go up 2 half steps (skip a key); H (half step) = go up 1 (the very next key). Start on C and follow W–W–H–W–W–W–H, counting along the ladder above:

Notice the whole steps jumped over every black key, so C major lands on all the white keys: C D E F G A B C.

Start the exact same pattern on a different note and the black keys start doing the work. From G: G W→ A W→ B H→ C W→ D W→ E W→ F♯ H→ G. You must use F♯ (not F) to keep the W–W–H–W–W–W–H shape — that one black key is why G major “has one sharp.”

Recommended major order: learn C first, then G → D → A → E (following the circle of fifths — one new sharp each time; they all share the same fingering), then F, and save the black-key scales (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb/F#) for last.

Recommended natural-minor order: start with A minor (the relative minor of C — all white keys), then E → D → G → C minor (same fingering as the majors above), leaving the black-key minors (F#, C#, G#, Eb, Bb) for last. Find any minor by taking the 6th note of a major you know, or by flattening a major's 3rd, 6th & 7th.

Which hand & coordination: the notes are the same for both hands, but the fingering differs — with Both hands selected the keyboard shows the left hand (blue) in the low octave and the right hand (gold) in the high octave, one empty octave apart, so you can read each register on its own. Practice in this order: right hand aloneleft hand alonehands together, slowly. The tricky moment is the thumb-tuck: going up, the right thumb (1) passes under after finger 3; the left hand crosses finger 3 over the thumb. Easiest first coordination: play contrary motion — both hands start on the same note and move apart, using the same finger numbers at the same time.
Two fingering rules that always hold here:
  • Thumb stays off the black keys. During a thumb-tuck, the thumb (1) always lands on a white key — true for every scale on this page.
  • Where each hand starts. On a white-key root the scale usually begins with finger 1 (right hand) or 5 (left hand); on a black-key root it usually begins with 2 or 3 (a couple of left-hand starts use 4). Try it: switch the root above and watch the first finger change.

Major Scale Modes

Major and natural minor are just the start. Play the same seven notes but start on a different one and you get the seven modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian…), each with its own color. There are also harmonic & melodic minor, pentatonic, blues and more.

Sight reading

You do not need perfect sight-reading on day one — match one written note to a key, then another. The full clef reference, the dynamics & tempo markings (p / f, Largo → Presto…), and progressive treble → bass → grand-staff drills all live on their own page. Chords

What is a chord?

A chord is three or more notes sounded together. Where a scale is notes played one after another (melody), a chord stacks them at the same time to make harmony. The most basic chord is the triad — just three notes.

How a triad is built

Start from the major scale of your root, then take its 1st, 3rd and 5th notes — that's a major triad. From the C major scale (C D E F G A B), the 1st, 3rd and 5th are C – E – G.

Change the quality (happy, sad, tense) by nudging the 3rd or 5th. We label them by scale degree: R = root, 3 = the scale's third, 5 = the scale's fifth. A lowers that degree a half-step; a raises it.

Quick tell: minor is just a major with a flattened 3rd (♭3). The 5th stays put except for the tense diminished (♭5) and the dreamy augmented (♯5).

Inversions: the same three notes stacked in a different order are still the same chord — C–E–G, E–G–C, and G–C–E are all "C major," just inverted. Inversions let one chord slide smoothly into the next.
Why do major and minor feel so different? It comes down to one note — the third. A major third sounds bright and open; lower it a half step to a minor third and the same chord turns wistful. Our ears also favour intervals whose frequencies form simple ratios — the octave is 2:1 and the perfect fifth is 3:2, which is why they sound so stable (an idea traced back to Pythagoras).

The chords in a key — harmonizing a scale

First, a word you'll meet everywhere: a scale degree is simply each note's position number in the scale. In C major (C D E F G A B), C is degree 1, D is 2, E is 3, and so on up to B = 7. When we mean the chord built on a degree we write it as a Roman numeral (I, ii, iii… for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree).

Harmonizing a scale means building a triad on every degree using only that scale's own notes — stack a note, skip one, stack the next, skip one, stack the next (the same 1–3–5 "stack of thirds" from above). Do that on all seven degrees of C major — i.e. harmonize C major — and you get the seven chords that naturally "belong" to the key of C. That is all “chords come from a scale” means: pick a key and it hands you its own family of chords.

The quality falls out on its own: I, IV, V come out major, ii, iii, vi come out minor, and vii° is diminished — and that pattern is the same in every major key. CAPITAL Roman numerals = major, lowercase = minor, ° = diminished. Most songs lean on I, IV, V and vi. Tap a chord to hear it:

Progression starter: C → Am → F → G (I–vi–IV–V in C). Play each as a block chord, then arpeggiate it (one note at a time).

Beyond triads

Stack one more third on a triad and you get 7th chords; keep going for 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. Swap or add a note and you get sus, add, 6th and altered chords. These richer colors power jazz, gospel, soul and film music.

Practice that actually sticks

Playing is a motor skill — it's built, not crammed. A handful of research-backed habits will take you further than hours of mindless repetition:

  • Go slow first. Speed is just a clean movement repeated faster, so make it clean at a slow tempo, then nudge the metronome up. One accurate slow rep beats ten sloppy fast ones.
  • Chunk it. Work a two-bar phrase, not the whole piece. Small wins stack.
  • Hands separately, then together. Let each hand learn its part before you combine them.
  • Short and often > long and rare. Ten focused minutes daily beats two hours on Sunday, and a night's sleep helps your brain lock it in.
  • Interleave & space it out. Mixing a few things (a scale, a chord change, a phrase) and revisiting them across days feels harder — but studies show it sticks far better than drilling one thing to death in a single block.
  • Think before you repeat. After a slip, pause and work out why before running it again.

Four-week starter plan

  1. Week 1 — Find middle C daily. Play C–D–E–F–G slowly. 10 minutes.
  2. Week 2 — C major scale hands separately. Ear training on C D E G. 12–15 minutes.
  3. Week 3 — C, F, G major chords. Simple I–V–vi–IV loop.
  4. Week 4 — One public-domain melody from IMSLP (e.g. a beginner method excerpt) + continue ear drills.
