Bass vs 6-string guitar

Same frets, same letter names on the bottom four strings — different job. If you already play guitar, unlearn “chord first, groove later.” Bass is time and foundation first.

Sibling room: Guitar for fretting and scale shapes. This page is the contract change when you pick up a bass.

What transfers from guitar

  • E A D G letter names — bass sounds an octave lower than guitar’s bottom four.
  • Fretboard math — 12 frets = octave; same interval shapes (root–fifth, octaves, pentatonics).
  • Left-hand discipline — one finger per fret boxes, clean fretting behind the wire.
  • TAB / note values — shared reading habits from Western theory.

Transfer is real. Thinking you can “just play guitar parts down an octave” is the trap.

Physical differences that change your playing

  • Scale & string mass — longer scale, thicker strings. Attack is slower; notes bloom. Digging in like a guitar pick attack often muddies the low end.
  • Sustain — bass rings forever if you let it. Muting is not optional polish; it is the technique.
  • Right hand — rock/metal default is fingers (i–m), not pick. Slap/pop has no guitar-room twin. See Fingerstyle and Slap.
  • Hand span — wider frets. Stretch shapes you use on guitar may need new fingerings or position shifts.
  • Amp / room — laptop speakers lie. Check parts on a speaker that can move air at least weekly.

Why “guitar chords on bass” usually fail

Full six-string chord grips on bass crowd the low midrange and fight vocals/guitars. Bass harmony tools that work:

  • Roots — always legal.
  • Root + fifth (power shape) — clear, mix-friendly.
  • Root + octave — thickness without muddy thirds.
  • Sparse double-stops / triads — for lead-bass moments; mute hard. See Lead bass.

When the chart says G–Em–C–D, guitarists grab shapes. Bassists ask: where does the kick hit, and which root motion sings?

Register: stay out of the way

Guitar lives in the midrange. Vocals live above. Bass owns the floor. Climbing onto the G string for every fill can steal space from the singer and the guitar solo.

  • Default: E and A strings for groove.
  • D and G: melodic answers, octaves, occasional hooks — then return low.
  • If the mix gets “small,” try an octave down, not up.

Guitar habits to leave at the door

  1. Strumming through changes — on bass, one well-placed root beats eight busy notes.
  2. Ending every phrase with a flashy lick — end with the pocket restored.
  3. Ignoring the kick — practice with drums or a kick-accent click. See Grooves.
  4. Leaving strings ringing — ghost and mute like they are notes. See Muting.
  5. Thinking in barre-chord grips — think in root motion + rhythm cells.

Mindset shift (one week drill)

Take any three-chord loop you know on guitar (e.g. G–Em–C–D). For seven days:

  1. Day 1–2: whole-note roots only on bass, locked to click 1.
  2. Day 3–4: roots on 1 and 3; silence elsewhere.
  3. Day 5: add ghosts on the “and”s — still only those roots pitched.
  4. Day 6: one fill in bar 4 only; bars 1–3 stay boring on purpose.
  5. Day 7: write two contrasting grooves for the same chart (see Write grooves).

If it feels “too simple,” you are probably doing it right.

Ready when

Move on when all of these are true on a normal day, not your best one:

  • You can say what a bass player listens for first (the drummer and the song's floor) and why a guitar-style chord grip fails on bass.
  • G – Em – C – D with whole-note roots locked to the click, then roots on 1 and 3 with silence between.
  • Root, root + fifth and root + octave as your default harmony tools, kept mostly on the E and A strings.
  • Two contrasting grooves written for one chart, with one fill in bar 4 and bars 1–3 boring on purpose.
