Lesson 113: Wanting to Know
Index · Lesson 112: Do Not Grieve · Lesson 114: To Be Known
A desire-word doubles the root. The noun means “the desire to do that verb.” The endings are ordinary endings. Learn the shape as a whole. Do not build a new double from a root that is not in this table. The rest of the desire-verb conjugation waits on the later list.
| Word | Like | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| जिज्ञासा | छात्रा | the desire to know. From ज्ञा. जान्ने इच्छा। |
| चिकीर्षा | छात्रा | the desire to do. From कृ. गर्ने इच्छा। |
| मुमुक्षुः | गुरुः | one who desires release. From मुच्. मुक्ति चाहने। |
जिज्ञासते means “he wants to know.” Say that one form. It is middle, like लभते. The other persons wait.
