Lesson 42: While Reading
Index · Lesson 41: It Is Done · Lesson 43: Having Gone
पठन् means “reading,” of a man, while the reading is going on. It describes the noun the way नवीनः does, and it also names the time: he does the other action while he reads.
A woman is पठन्ती, and she follows नदी from Lesson 27: The River. A thing is पठत्, with no visarga. The man’s object is पठन्तम्. The with-form is पठता. The in-form is पठति, and that shape looks like the verb पठति. In this lesson the in-form is the describing word, not the verb.
गच्छन् means “going.” तिष्ठन् means “standing.” They follow पठन्.
