Lesson 44: In Order to Read
Index · Lesson 43: Having Gone · Lesson 45: Ought to Be Done
पठितुम् means “to read,” or “in order to read.” Like गत्वा, it does not change for gender. Before a consonant, म् is written ं.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| पठितुम् | to read |
| गन्तुम् | to go. Not गमितुम्. |
| कर्तुम् | to do |
| दातुम् | to give |
| द्रष्टुम् | to see |
| स्थातुम् | to stand |
| भवितुम् | to become |
| श्रोतुम् | to hear |
| ज्ञातुम् | to know |
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| अहं पठितुम् इच्छामि। | I want to read. पढ्न म चाहन्छु। पठितुम् keeps म् because इच्छामि starts with a vowel. |
| सः जलं पातुं गच्छति। | He goes in order to drink water. पातुम् is “to drink,” and it is written पातुं before a consonant. |
| अहं गुरुं द्रष्टुम् इच्छामि। | I want to see the teacher. |
| बालः खादितुं तिष्ठति। | The boy stands in order to eat. खादितुम् is written खादितुं before a consonant. |
