Lesson 56: The One Who
Index · Lesson 55: This One Here · Lesson 57: All
यः means “the one who,” a man. या is the woman. यत् is the thing. The answer is सः, सा, or तत्, which you already know. यः starts the relative clause. सः starts the answer.
| Case | Who, man | Who, woman | Which thing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject |
| Object |
| With, by | येन | यया | येन |
| In, at | यस्मिन् | यस्याम् | यस्मिन् |
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| The one who reads knows.
| The river which is long is the Gaṅgā. दीर्घः means “long,” and it matches like नवीनः. A woman is दीर्घा. |
| The book which is there is mine. पुस्तकम् keeps म् because अस्ति starts with a vowel. |
| I also stand in the house in which the teacher stands. अहम् keeps म् because अपि starts with a vowel. |
