Śruti: The Vedas and Upaniṣads

This page is the heard foundation, in one sitting. The chapters are the deep dives.

Śruti (श्रुति) is what is heard. The tradition sets it above what it later remembers: the epics, the purāṇas, and the books of conduct. Those are smṛti (स्मृति). They tell the stories and the rules. This portal is the voice they claim to rest on. A reader can take the landscape in this one sitting, and then open any chapter when a hymn or a dialogue needs the longer account.

The portal holds four Vedas. Ten sittings cover the saṃhitās and the layers. Twelve sittings cover the principal Upaniṣads. Three of those Upaniṣads are already sat, mantra by mantra, on the verse shelf. A Sanskrit line is printed here only when the wording is secure. The rest is prose, and it says so.

The four layers (चतुःस्तर)

The books are taught in four layers. The order is a teaching order. It is not a promise that every line was composed in that sequence, and it is not a claim that each layer is a separate volume. One text can sit in more than one layer. The Īśāvāsya (ईशावास्य) is chapter 40 of a saṃhitā and it is an upaniṣad.

The saṃhitā (संहिता) is the collection: hymns and the formulas spoken at the rite. The line is metrical. A god is addressed by name. The brāhmaṇa (ब्राह्मण) is the prose that ties the formula to the act, and the act to the world and the person. Those ties are the bandhu (बन्धु). This portal does not become a manual of the acts. The āraṇyaka (आरण्यक) is the forest book. The person who has left the public fire takes the rite inward. Breath, chant, and flame are set next to each other. The upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) is the sitting near a teacher. The question changes. It asks what the rite was about, what remains at death, and what the self is.

Each Veda is kept by śākhā (शाखा), branches of recitation. This guide names a branch when the tradition is stable, and it says when an order belongs to one school. Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) reads the Veda as what is to be done. Vedānta (वेदान्त) reads the upaniṣad as what is to be known. Both first sūtras are already sat, Mīmāṃsā 1.1.1 and Brahma Sūtra 1.1.1. The hymns come first. The deep account of the layers is the first Veda sitting.

Ṛgveda (ऋग्वेद)

The hymn book is arranged in ten maṇḍalas. Maṇḍalas 2 through 7 are the family books in the traditional account. Maṇḍala 9 is Soma. The word the hymns trust is ṛta (ऋत), the order dawn and true speech both keep. Varuṇa guards it. Agni is fire and the priest. Indra is praised for striking the serpent Vṛtra and releasing the waters. Soma, Mitra, Uṣas, the Aśvins, and the Maruts stand beside them. Viṣṇu here is the wide-strider. The purāṇic avatāras are later. Rudra is fewer and fierce. Sarasvatī is a river and she is speech.

Three passages carry the questions a reader brings. The Nāsadīya, Ṛgveda 10.129, is the creation hymn that will not close. There was neither the non-existent nor the existent. That one breathed without wind. The gods are later than this creation. He who watches in the highest heaven knows, or perhaps he does not. The Puruṣa, 10.90, is the other picture: a person who covers the earth and still stands beyond it. One quarter is all beings. Three quarters are the immortal in heaven. The world is pictured as his offering, and the four varṇas are pictured as arising from his body. The picture is what the hymn says. A social rule is what later books made of it. The Gāyatrī is one verse, Ṛgveda 3.62.10, in the meter of that name: we meditate on the radiance of Savitṛ, and ask him to impel our thoughts. A household recitation sets oṃ and bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ in front of it. Those syllables are the household frame. The saṃhitā line begins at tat savitur. The gods of the family books are their own sitting.

Yajurveda (यजुर्वेद)

This is the Veda of the formulas spoken while the rite is done. Action is already being read as more than action. The white recension, śukla (शुक्ल), is the Vājasaneyi. Mantra and explanation are separated. The brāhmaṇa is the Śatapatha. The śākhās a reader meets are Mādhyandina and Kāṇva. The black recension, kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण), mixes mantra and explanation. Taittirīya, Maitrāyaṇī, and Kāṭhaka are the names, and Kapiṣṭhala-Kaṭha is often named as a fourth. Black means the mixture.

The brāhmaṇa ties a cup, a chant, a pace, to the world and the person. The āraṇyaka takes the fire inward. The upaniṣad asks what the rite was about. This portal does not list implements or the order of a sacrifice. Śrī Rudram is the long homage inside this Veda, carried in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā and in the Vājasaneyi. Homage begins with the wrath, the arrow, the bow, and the arms. The namakam is the movement built on namaḥ. The camakam is the movement built on ca me, and for me. The shape is the teaching. A pūjā script is not. The white and the black are one sitting.

Sāmaveda (सामवेद)

This is the Veda of what is sung. Most of its verses are ṛgvedic verses set to melody. The ṛc is the verse as said. The sāman is the verse as sung. Vowels stretch. Syllables are inserted, the stobha, which are not in the ṛc. The printed recension a student usually meets is the Kauthuma. Rāṇāyanīya and Jaiminīya, also called Talavakāra, are the other names the tradition keeps. The Kena belongs to the Talavakāra side. The Chāndogya belongs to the Kauthuma side.

The tradition traces the authority of sacred melody to this Veda. The systems of rāga are later books. They are not inside the Sāmaveda. The lore of gāndharva is on its own shelf. Nāda, as Śārṅgadeva speaks of it, is on the speech shelf. The sitting is melody and Gāndharva.

Atharvaveda (अथर्ववेद)

This is the Veda that stays in the house. Healing, herbs, a peaceful assembly, a peaceful dwelling, and speculative hymns that ask what the world rests on. The Śaunaka recension is the one usually printed. The Paippalāda numbers differently. When this portal cites a number, it is the Śaunaka number. The healing hymns name herbs and ask for well-being. Later Āyurveda traces a root to that care. Caraka and Suśruta are later books, and this portal does not become them. The theme is named. A remedy is not given. Some hymns are hostile charms. The book contains them. These pages do not turn them into instructions.

The speculative voice is the Skambha, the cosmic pillar, Śaunaka 10.7 and 10.8. In whom are the worlds, the gods, the breaths, and knowledge itself set? The support the hymn seeks is not one more post in a hall. A post would need a ground. The upaniṣadic question is already being asked, under the name of a pillar. No verse of that hymn is invented here. The house and its hymns are the sitting before it.

The twelve (द्वादश)

Śaṅkara (शङ्कर)'s famous set is ten: Īśā, Kena, Kaṭha, Praśna, Muṇḍaka, Māṇḍūkya, Taittirīya, Aitareya, Chāndogya, Bṛhadāraṇyaka. This guide follows a list of twelve titles. The twelfth sitting holds the Kauṣītaki and the Maitrī, two books the lists do not always count the same way. The Śvetāśvatara is later in voice. It is not one of the ten. A commentary under Śaṅkara's name is sometimes printed with it. The attribution is left unfrozen. The book of twelve is its own contents.

Īśā. White Yajurveda, Vājasaneyi 40, Kāṇva order on the shelf. No dialogue. All this is to be inhabited by the lord. Enjoy by what has been renounced. The next mantra wishes a hundred years of rites. Renunciation and action sit side by side. Eighteen mantras, already sat.

Kena. Sāmaveda, Talavakāra, also called Jaiminīya. By what is the mind sent? The sender is not an object the mind can reach. The gods boast of a victory. A yakṣa sets a straw before Agni and Vāyu, and neither can master it. Umā tells Indra that the being was Brahman.

Kaṭha. Black Yajurveda, Kāṭhaka. Naciketas and Yama. Three nights, three boons. The third is what happens at death. The boy refuses wealth and long life. The self is not slain when the body is slain. The chariot is vallī 3. One hundred nineteen mantras, already sat.

Praśna. Atharvaveda, Pippalāda, who is also the teacher in the book. Six students, six questions: birth, the powers that support a creature, how breath enters, who sleeps and who dreams, which syllable of oṃ leads where, and who the person of sixteen parts is. The climb is from birth to breath to the person who is not one more part.

Muṇḍaka. Atharvaveda. Śaunaka asks Aṅgiras what, being known, leaves all this known. Lower knowledge is the Veda and its sciences. Higher knowledge reaches the imperishable. Two birds clasp one tree. One eats the sweet fruit. The other looks on. Truth alone prevails, and the verse does not stop at the motto: by truth the path of the gods is stretched.

Māṇḍūkya. Atharvaveda. Twelve mantras, already sat. This self is Brahman, and it has four feet: waking, dream, deep sleep, and the fourth. The shelf's word is caturtha. Turīya belongs to Gauḍapāda's kārikā, a different book. The same four feet are the sounds a, u, m, and the measureless.

Taittirīya. Black Yajurveda, inside the Taittirīya Āraṇyaka. Five sheaths: food, breath, mind, understanding, bliss. Bhṛgu asks his father Varuṇa and is sent back until he finds bliss. The four words sat from the middle vallī: Brahman is truth, knowledge, infinite.

Aitareya. Ṛgveda, inside the Aitareya Āraṇyaka. The self alone arranges worlds and a person for the powers to enter. The close asks who this self is, by whom one sees and knows, and answers prajñānaṃ brahma (प्रज्ञानं ब्रह्म). Consciousness is Brahman.

Chāndogya. Sāmaveda, Kauthuma. Uddālaka teaches Śvetaketu with the seed of a banyan (nyagrodha) fruit and with salt dissolved in water. The subtle essence is not seen, and all this has that as its self. That is the real. That is the self. That you are. Satyakāma tells the truth about his birth and is taught. Nārada is led toward the vast. Indra stays with Prajāpati after Virocana has left with the body.

Bṛhadāraṇyaka. White Yajurveda, the āraṇyaka of the Śatapatha. Yājñavalkya at Janaka's court. Gārgī asks about the warp of the worlds and is warned not to over-ask. Maitreyī refuses a settlement and asks for what he knows: nothing is dear for its own sake, but for the self. In the beginning the self knew, I am Brahman. The self is then spoken by stripping every handle: not this, not this.

Śvetāśvatara. Black Yajurveda, six chapters, a later voice. A lord hidden in all beings, the witness, and without qualities, in one verse. Meditation is taught as holding the mind like a driver reining in unruly horses (2.9); the self, like a lamp, then shows Brahman (2.15). The page does not become a practice manual. Homage and neti neti meet.

Kauṣītaki and Maitrī. Two books in one sitting. The Kauṣītaki, of the Ṛgveda, has Indra tell Pratardana that he is breath and the conscious self. The line is not sat. The Maitrī, of the black Yajurveda, is later and composite. King Bṛhadratha leaves his throne. The body is described harshly. The self is taught as distinct. Later chapters add yoga and a more sectarian theology. The ten remain the famous set. These two are the edge, where the lists disagree.

How to read on

This page is the map. The four Vedas are ten sittings. The twelve are twelve. The verse shelf is the Māṇḍūkya, the Īśāvāsya, and the Kaṭha, one mantra at a time. Darśana, the epics, and the purāṇas are the three pillars beside this ground. Household stories stay outside them.
