And he who is avipastha (अविपस्थ) is the cause of knowing.
नेपालीमा
र जो अविपस्थ हो, ऊ ज्ञानको कारण हो।
Where it sits
The nirukta of avipastha (अविपस्थ) belongs to the Vimarśinī (विमर्शिनी). The sitting keeps the word and reports that reading as the commentary's. The wheel of powers is the place the commentary means. 1.6 named the wheel.
Split: yaḥ (यः) + avipasthaḥ (अविपस्थः) + jñāhetuḥ (ज्ञाहेतुः) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| yaḥ (यः) | nominative singular, masculine | who. |
| avipasthaḥ (अविपस्थः) | nominative singular, masculine | avipastha. The sūtra (सूत्र) does not gloss the compound. Kṣemarāja (क्षेमराज) takes avi (अवि) as the bound, pa (प) as protector, and stha (स्थ) as standing: one who stands among the powers that protect the bound. |
| jñāhetuḥ (ज्ञाहेतुः) | nominative singular, masculine | the cause of knowing. hetu (हेतु) is a cause. |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and. |
The phrases
Who is avipastha (अविपस्थ) is also the cause of knowing. The relative yaḥ (यः) expects a he already in view, the one of 3.25.
Sanskrit in this line
yaḥ (यः) plus a (अ) becomes yo (यो), with the avagraha. jñāhetuḥ (ज्ञाहेतुः) before c (च्) becomes jñāhetuś (ज्ञाहेतुश्). Visarga before c (च्) becomes ś (श्).
Say it back
Undo both pieces of sandhi. Then say the commentary's cut of avipastha (अविपस्थ) as the commentary's.
