Patañjali (पतञ्जलि)'s Yoga (योग) Sūtras (सूत्र)

Executive summary

Patañjali (पतञ्जलि)'s Yoga Sūtra (सूत्र) is one hundred and ninety-five lines in four pādas (पाद). Yoga is the stilling of the activities of the mind. Then the seer abides in its own form. Otherwise the seer takes the form of those activities. Practice and dispassion are the two means. The book then names the afflictions, the eight limbs, the powers that come from collecting the mind, and the aloneness that remains when even those powers are set down. A reading the sūtra (सूत्र) itself does not spell, when a sitting uses one, is Vyāsa (व्यास)'s bhāṣya (भाष्य), and the sitting says so.

The four pādas

One sūtra is one sitting. The line is read in Sanskrit, then split into words, then put back together as phrases. The grammar is the ending that line needs. This is the same kind of book as Learn Sanskrit, not a music room.

The first sixteen name yoga (योग), the five activities of the mind, and the two means of stilling them. Stay with them until citta (चित्त), vṛtti (वृत्ति), nirodha (निरोध), draṣṭṛ (द्रष्टृ), abhyāsa (अभ्यास), and vairāgya (वैराग्य) come without looking. The list of those words sits at the end of 1.16.

The path of every line, Sanskrit and one sentence, is all 195 lines.

When a sitting gives a reading the sūtra (सूत्र) itself does not spell, the reading is Vyāsa (व्यास)'s bhāṣya (भाष्य), the primary commentary. The sitting names him there. The line you recite is still the sūtra (सूत्र). The grammar is worked from the ending.
