Where it sits
1.16 ended the means. This line leaves the means and names the samādhi (समाधि) they approach, the one in which a content is still known. 1.18 will name the other.
Split: vitarka (वितर्क) + vicāra (विचार) + ānanda (आनन्द) + asmitā (अस्मिता) + rūpa (रूप) + anugamāt (अनुगमात्) + saṃprajñātaḥ (संप्रज्ञातः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| vitarka (वितर्क) | stem, inside the compound | reasoning. Thinking a coarse object through. |
| vicāra (विचार) | stem | reflection. The finer examination, once the coarse thinking has thinned. |
| ānanda (आनन्द) | stem | joy. A brightness that is still a mental activity. |
| asmitā (अस्मिता) | stem | the sense of I. The bare feeling that there is a someone here. |
| rūpa (रूप) | stem | form. Each of the four is a form the samādhi (समाधि) can wear. |
| anugamāt (अनुगमात्) | ablative singular of anugama (अनुगम) | from accompaniment. Because it comes along with those forms. |
| saṃprajñātaḥ (संप्रज्ञातः) | nominative singular, masculine | the cognitive one. Samādhi (समाधि) in which something is still known. The noun samādhi (समाधि) is understood. |
The phrases
vitarka-vicārānandāsmitā-rūpānugamāt (वितर्कविचारानन्दास्मितारूपानुगमात्) is one compound in the ablative. Read it from the end: from accompaniment, and the accompaniment is by forms, and the forms are reasoning, reflection, joy, and the sense of I.
saṃprajñātaḥ (संप्रज्ञातः) is the subject, nominative singular masculine. There is no verb. The line says what this samādhi (समाधि) is accompanied by. The four are not four samādhis (समाधि) piled up. They are four ways the knowing can still be colored.
Sanskrit in this line
The new ending is the ablative -āt (आत्), “from,” here “because it comes along with.” You already know how the long compound is built: a (अ) + ā (आ) and a (अ) + a (अ) make ā (आ), so vicāra (विचार) + ānanda (आनन्द) is vicārānanda (विचारानन्द) and rūpa (रूप) + anugama (अनुगम) is rūpānugama (रूपानुगम). Only anugama (अनुगम) wears the ending.
Say it back
Name the four forms in order, then the word they accompany: saṃprajñātaḥ (संप्रज्ञातः). If the ablative will not come, stay on anugamāt (अनुगमात्).
