प्रयत्नशैथिल्यानन्तसमापत्तिभ्याम्
prayatna-śaithilyānanta-samāpattibhyām
The line
By relaxing effort, and by coinciding with the endless.
नेपालीमा
प्रयत्न खुकुलो पारेर र अनन्तसँग मिलेर त्यो हुन्छ।
Where it sits
2.46 defined posture. This line is the how. 1.12 promised that -ābhyām (आभ्याम्) would return here, and it has, in the i-stem shape -ibhyām (इभ्याम्). The fruit of posture is the next line.
Split: prayatna (प्रयत्न) + śaithilya (शैथिल्य) + ananta (अनन्त) + samāpattibhyām (समापत्तिभ्याम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| prayatna (प्रयत्न) | stem | effort. |
| śaithilya (शैथिल्य) | stem | relaxation, slackening. |
| ananta (अनन्त) | stem | the endless. What has no limit. |
| samāpattibhyām (समापत्तिभ्याम्) | instrumental dual of samāpatti (समापत्ति) | by the two coincidings. By relaxing effort, and by coinciding with the endless. |
The phrases
The verb and the noun āsana (आसन) are understood. Posture is perfected by two means. śaithilya (शैथिल्य) + ananta (अनन्त) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). The dual -bhyām (भ्याम्) is instrumental, “by the two,” the ending of 1.12 without the long ā (आ) because the stem samāpatti (समापत्ति) is an i-stem: -ibhyām (इभ्याम्).
The two means are a slackening of effort, and a samāpatti (समापत्ति) with the endless. Force is not how the seat becomes steady and easeful.
Sanskrit in this line
Instrumental dual of an i-stem is -bhyām (भ्याम्) with a short i (इ) in front: samāpattibhyām (समापत्तिभ्याम्). The ā (आ) of -ābhyām (आभ्याम्) belonged to the a (अ)-stem abhyāsa-vairāgya (अभ्यासवैराग्य), where a (अ) + ā (आ) made the long vowel. Do not put that long ā (आ) on every dual. Look at the stem.
Say it back
Say the two means with the dual ending still attached.
