3.19
प्रत्ययस्य परचित्तज्ञानम्
pratyayasya para-citta-jñānam
The line
Of an idea, knowledge of another mind.
नेपालीमा
प्रत्ययबाट अर्को चित्तको ज्ञान हुन्छ।
Where it sits
The power looks larger than it is. The next line says you do not thereby know the object the other mind is aimed at. Read 3.19 and 3.20 as one claim and one limit.
Split: pratyayasya (प्रत्ययस्य) + para (पर) + citta (चित्त) + jñānam (ज्ञानम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| pratyayasya (प्रत्ययस्य) | genitive singular | of an idea. From saṃyama (संयम) on an idea, understood. |
| para (पर) | stem | another. A different person. |
| citta (चित्त) | stem | mind. |
| jñānam (ज्ञानम्) | nominative singular, neuter | knowledge. |
The phrases
Of an idea, knowledge of another mind. The saṃyama (संयम) is understood from the pattern. The genitive pratyayasya (प्रत्ययस्य) is the object. Knowing the idea, one knows the other mind that has it. 3.20 will immediately limit this.
Sanskrit in this line
Genitive pratyayasya (प्रत्ययस्य) marks the object of the practice when the line omits saṃyamāt (संयमात्). “Of X” in these power lines often means “from saṃyama (संयम) on X.” The nominative is still the knowledge.
Say it back
Say what you come to know, and from what. Then read 3.20 before you believe the claim is unlimited.
Next
3.20. But not together with that idea's support, because the support has not been made the object.
