28. Vālin

Kiṣkindhā (किष्किन्धा)

The first fight fails because Rāma cannot tell the brothers apart. Sugrīva comes off the field bleeding and betrayed in his own mind. Rāma gives him a garland for the second time, a mark visible from the trees. He fights again. Rāma's arrow comes from hiding. Vālin falls. The page says the arrow comes from behind the trees, and that Vālin falls. It does not describe the shot.

Vālin's speech is the ethical center of the kāṇḍa, and the poem gives it room. You struck from hiding, while I fought someone else. That is not a warrior's law. Rāma's answer is the one the poem gives him, not a later smoothing. You took your brother's wife, Rumā. A king who does that may be punished by a king. I gave Sugrīva my word. The page sets both speeches down and does not pretend the answer satisfies the accusation. A hidden shot is still a hidden shot. An adulterous king is still a king who was not fought in the open.

Vālin dies reconciled, which is the poem's way. He gives his son Aṅgada into Sugrīva's keeping, and Tārā, his wife, becomes part of the court that has just widowed her. Sugrīva is king. The alliance has been paid for. The search does not start. The rains start, and a new king goes into his restored rooms, and Rāma, who does not enter a city while in exile, stays on the mountain and waits.
