37. The jewel
Sundara (सुन्दर)
The party on the near shore sees him coming, and the return is a celebration that wrecks Sugrīva's honey-grove, the Madhuvana, which the monkeys raid in a joy that looks like indiscipline. Sugrīva, told of the wreck, reads it correctly. They would not dare, unless the news was good. Anger turns into summons. Hanumān tells it once to the party and once, in full, to Rāma.
The jewel is the proof. Rāma weeps, which the poem allows the hero to do at every true news, good or bad. He hears the private memory of the crow and knows the messenger sat in front of his wife. He hears that she will not come except with him, and that her courage has a term on it. The search is over. The war has a location, a witness, and a clock.
The Sundara-kāṇḍa ends on a shore that is no longer a despair. One minister crossed the sea and came back with a sentence the armies can act on. The next kāṇḍa is the war. This one was the finding. The tradition calls it the beautiful kāṇḍa, and the beauty it means is not Laṅkā's palaces. It is a servant's competence, governed by the captive's wish.
