Lesson 108: He Obtains

Index · Lesson 107: Having Left · Lesson 109: Say, and Know

आप् means “obtain,” पाउनु. The present is आप्नोति. It follows शक्नोति, from Lesson 90: He Can, not शृणोति. The plural “we” has उ, आप्नुमः, not ओ.

सः / साआप्नोतिपाउँछ
वयम्आप्नुमःपाउँछौं
यूयम्आप्नुथपाउँछौ
तेआप्नुवन्तिपाउँछन्

A prefix makes one word, as lesson 89 does. प्र ends in अ, and आप् begins with आ, so the vowel is आ and the verb is प्राप्नोति. अव ends in व्, so the आ of आप् stays and the verb is अवाप्नोति. Both mean “obtains.” अव pulls the meaning toward “reaches, comes to have.”

SentenceMeaning
बालः फलं प्राप्नोति।The boy obtains the fruit. केटाले फल पाउँछ।
अहं ज्ञानम् अवाप्नोमि।I obtain knowledge. म ज्ञान पाउँछु। ज्ञानम् means “knowledge,” ज्ञान. It is like पुस्तकम्. ज्ञानम् keeps म् because अवाप्नोमि starts with a vowel.
ते ज्ञानं प्राप्नुवन्ति।They obtain knowledge.
