Lesson 16: To Hear

Index · Lesson 15: Eat, Drink, and Write · Lesson 17: Gone and Studied

Lesson 1 used शृणोमि, “I hear,” as one form. Say it “shri-no-mi.” शृ is श with the short vowel ऋ, one syllable. The guide is in the introduction. The verb is श्रु, “to hear.” Its present stem is शृणु, “shri-nu,” and the endings are a different set from पठति.

वचनम् means “speech,” or “word.” It is neuter, like पुस्तकम्. This noun is not the grammar word वचन. एकवचन is one, द्विवचन is two, and बहुवचन is more than two.
