Lesson 26: Fire
Index · Lesson 25: The Teacher's Endings · Lesson 27: The River
अग्निः means fire, आगो. The introduction already spells it. This lesson is the other jobs. The last vowel is short इ. School calls that shape इकारान्त. This column is the masculine one. A feminine noun in इ is Lesson 28: Thought and Night, and it is not this column.
One fire
| Case | Form | A whole sentence | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject | अग्निः | अग्निः अस्ति। | आगो छ। There is fire. The subject ः looks like गुरुः and like छात्रः. |
| Object | अग्निम् | अहम् अग्निं पश्यामि। | म आगो देख्छु। अहम् keeps म् because अग्निं starts with a vowel. The object म् is written ं before प. |
| With, by | अग्निना | अग्निना सह अहं गच्छामि। | आगोसँग म जान्छु। This is not अग्निणा and not अग्नेन. |
| For | अग्नये | इदं जलम् अग्नये अस्ति। | यो पानी आगोका लागि हो। जलम् means “water.” The म् stays, because अग्नये starts with a vowel. |
| From | अग्नेः | अहम् अग्नेः शृणोमि। | म आगोबाट सुन्छु। अहम् keeps म् because अग्नेः starts with a vowel. From and of are the same shape, अग्नेः. |
| Of | अग्नेः | अग्नेः प्रकाशः अस्ति। | आगोको प्रकाश छ। प्रकाशः means “light,” उज्यालो. It takes the छात्र column: प्रकाशः, प्रकाशम्, प्रकाशेन. |
| In, at | अग्नौ | अग्नौ जलम् अस्ति। | आगोमा पानी छ। This is not अग्ने. अग्ने is the calling form. |
| Calling | अग्ने | हे अग्ने। | ए आगो। The call is अग्ने. It is not अग्नि and it is not अग्निः. |
More than two fires
| Case | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | अग्नयः | fires, doing the action |
| Calling | अग्नयः | हे अग्नयः |
| Object | अग्नीन् | the fires that receive the action |
| With, by | अग्निभिः | with the fires, or by the fires |
| For | अग्निभ्यः | for the fires |
| From | अग्निभ्यः | from the fires |
| Of | अग्नीनाम् | of the fires |
| In, at | अग्निषु | in the fires |
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| अग्नयः सन्ति। | Fires are there. |
| अहम् अग्नीन् पश्यामि। | I see the fires. अहम् keeps म् because अग्नीन् starts with a vowel. |
| इदम् अग्नीनां जलम् अस्ति। | This is the fires’ water. अग्नीनाम् is written अग्नीनां before a consonant. |
The same column
| Word | Meaning | Nepali |
|---|---|---|
| ऋषिः | sage | ऋषि |
| कविः | poet | कवि |
| मुनिः | sage, a silent one | मुनि |
ऋषिः पठति। “The sage studies.” ऋषि पढ्छ। इदम् ऋषेः पुस्तकम् अस्ति। “This is the sage’s book.” यो ऋषिको पुस्तक हो। The “of” form is ऋषेः, the same job as अग्नेः.
Two fires are not in this lesson.
