Lesson 31: Numbers in Every Case
Index · Lesson 30: Small Words
Lesson 24: Numbers is एक through दश as the subject, beside a noun that is also the subject. This lesson is the other jobs. The number and the noun still match. एकः छात्रः is one man, doing the action. एकम् छात्रम् is one man, receiving it. The noun’s own ending is the one you already know. The number has its own ending beside it.
One, two, three, and four still change for a man, a woman, and a thing. Five through ten do not.
One
एकः in the subject looks like छात्रः. एकम् and एकेन and एकस्य also look like the छात्र column. “For,” “from,” and “in” do not. एकस्मै is not एकाय. एकस्मात् is not एकात्. एकस्मिन् is not एके.
| Case | One man | A whole sentence | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject | एकः छात्रः | एकः छात्रः पठति। | One man studies. Already in Lesson 24. |
| Object | एकम् छात्रम् | गुरुः एकं छात्रं पश्यति। | The teacher sees one student. Both words write ं before a consonant. |
| With, by | एकेन छात्रेण | एकेन छात्रेण सह अहं गच्छामि। | I go with one student. एक जना विद्यार्थीसँग म जान्छु। |
| For | एकस्मै छात्राय | इदं पुस्तकम् एकस्मै छात्राय अस्ति। | This book is for one student. पुस्तकम् keeps म् because एकस्मै starts with a vowel. |
| From | एकस्मात् छात्रात् | अहम् एकस्मात् छात्रात् शृणोमि। | I hear from one student. अहम् keeps म् because एकस्मात् starts with a vowel. |
| Of | एकस्य छात्रस्य | इदम् एकस्य छात्रस्य पुस्तकम् अस्ति। | This is one student’s book. एकस्य matches छात्रस्य. इदम् keeps म् before a vowel. |
| In, at | एकस्मिन् छात्रे | एकस्मिन् छात्रे ज्ञानम् अस्ति। | Knowledge is in one student. |
One woman uses एका in the subject, as Lesson 24 has. The other jobs are not the छात्रा column.
| Case | One woman | One thing |
|---|---|---|
“I go with one woman student.” एकस्मिन् पुस्तके ज्ञानम् अस्ति। “Knowledge is in one book.”
Two
The subject and the object are already द्वौ and द्वे. Every other job is one of two shapes, for a man, a woman, and a thing.
| Jobs | Form | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| With, for, from | द्वाभ्याम् | अहं द्वाभ्यां छात्राभ्यां सह गच्छामि। I go with two students. द्वाभ्याम् and छात्राभ्याम् are both written with ं before a consonant. |
| Of, in | द्वयोः | इदं द्वयोः छात्रयोः पुस्तकम् अस्ति। This is the two students’ book. द्वयोः छात्रयोः ज्ञानम् अस्ति। Knowledge is in the two students. |
द्वे छात्रे and द्वे पुस्तके keep द्वे. Their “with” form is still द्वाभ्याम्, beside छात्राभ्याम् or पुस्तकाभ्याम्.
Three and four, one man
| Case | Three | Four |
|---|---|---|
“I go with three students.” तीन जना विद्यार्थीसँग म जान्छु। इदं त्रयाणां छात्राणां पुस्तकम् अस्ति। “This is the three students’ book.” त्रयाणाम् and छात्राणाम् are written with ं before a consonant: त्रयाणां छात्राणां पुस्तकम्.
A woman and a thing do not use त्रयः and चत्वारः except as the subject forms Lesson 24 already has. The other jobs:
| Case | Three women | Three things | Four women | Four things |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Three women, as the object, stay तिस्रः छात्राः. They do not become त्रीन्. गुरुः तिस्रः छात्राः पश्यति। “The teacher sees three women students.”
Five through ten
In the subject and in the object, the number does not change. पञ्च छात्राः means five men, doing the action. पञ्च छात्रान् means five men, receiving it. The noun changes. पञ्च does not. A woman stays पञ्च छात्राः in both of those jobs. गुरुः पञ्च छात्राः पश्यति। “The teacher sees five women students.” The men’s object was पञ्च छात्रान्.
“With,” “for,” “from,” “of,” and “in” do change. The new shape is the same for a man, a woman, and a thing. The noun beside it still takes the ending you know.
| With, by | For, from | Of | In, at | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Before a voiced consonant, the ट् of षट् is written ड्. That is why “with six” is षड्भिः and “for six” is षड्भ्यः. “In six” is षट्सु. “Of six” is षण्णाम्.
अष्टौ is the subject and the object. Another school form for the other jobs is अष्टाभिः, अष्टाभ्यः, अष्टानाम्, अष्टासु. This book uses अष्टभिः, अष्टभ्यः, अष्टानाम्, अष्टसु.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| पञ्च छात्राः पठन्ति। | Five men study. |
| गुरुः पञ्च छात्रान् पश्यति। | The teacher sees five men students. |
| गुरुः पञ्च छात्राः पश्यति। | The teacher sees five women students. |
| पञ्चभिः छात्रैः सह अहं गच्छामि। | I go with five students. |
| इदं पञ्चानां छात्राणां पुस्तकम् अस्ति। | This is the five students’ book. पञ्चानाम् is written पञ्चानां before a consonant. |
| दशसु छात्रेषु ज्ञानम् अस्ति। | Knowledge is in ten students. |
Numbers after ten wait on the later list. Two of a noun that is not the अ shape also wait.
