This is a lookup, not a lesson to memorize in order. Find the word. The “Like” column names the lesson word whose endings it takes. Put that ending on it. The eight jobs are still learned on छात्र, छात्रा, and पुस्तकम् first. A new word is for looking up.

A whole group, such as the twelve months or the parts of the body, is a word set. The sentences for those groups are on the set’s own page. Birds, festivals, gods, fruit, the clock, and the Bagmati are there too. The words that return in a śloka are the verse word sets. The column a word takes is still named here, or on that page.

How to put a word into a sentence

ग्रामः means village, गाउँ. It is like छात्रः. “To the village” is the object: ग्रामम्, written ग्रामं before a consonant. “I go to the village.”

मित्रम् means friend, साथी. It is like पुस्तकम्, a thing-word in its endings, even though a friend is a person. “Of the friend” is मित्रस्य. “This is the friend’s book.” The call is हे मित्र, which Lesson 19: Commands already uses.

वायुः means wind, हावा. It is like गुरुः. “With the wind” is वायुना, not वायुेण.

It is like नदी. The subject is पुत्री, with no visarga. “Of the daughter” is पुत्र्याः. “This is the daughter’s book.”

A sentence from the list

I go to the village.
I go to the forest. वनम् is like पुस्तकम्, so the object is वनम्, written वनं.
The sun is in the sky. आकाशे is the “in” form, like छात्रे.
A flower is on the tree. वृक्षे is “in, on the tree,” like छात्रे.
The horse goes along the road. मार्गम् is the object, written मार्गं.
The dog is in the house.
This milk is for the friend. दुग्धम् is written दुग्धं before मित्राय. मित्राय is “for the friend,” and because मित्रम् is like पुस्तकम्, “for” is मित्राय, the neuter “for” ending from Lesson 5: Neuter Singular.
