Lesson 89: A Prefix on the Verb
Index · Lesson 88: If He Should Read · Lesson 90: He Can
A prefix on the front of a verb makes one word. It is not two words written apart. आगच्छति, “he comes,” has been one word since Lesson 1: Cases and To Be. The prefix is आ, “here, toward.”
| Prefix | With गच्छति | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| आ | आगच्छति | he comes |
| प्र | प्रगच्छति | he goes forth |
| सम् | सङ्गच्छति | he goes together with someone. सम् before ग is written सङ्. The ङ् is part of the word. |
| निस् | निर्गच्छति | he goes out. स् before ग becomes र्, and the word is निर्गच्छति. |
| उप | उपगच्छति | he approaches |
| अनु | अनुगच्छति | he follows |
The endings do not change. प्रगच्छामि is “I go forth.” निर्गच्छन्ति is “they go out.”
| Sentence | Meaning |

| बालः गृहात् निर्गच्छति। | The boy goes out of the house. बालक घरबाट निस्किन्छ। |
