Where it sits
3.34 is the one who is freed from that pair. The genitive here is what the thinking is about.
Split: sukhaduḥkhayoḥ (सुखदुःखयोः) + bahirmananam (बहिर्मननम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| sukhaduḥkhayoḥ (सुखदुःखयोः) | genitive dual | of pleasure and of pain. The dual ending belongs to both. |
| bahirmananam (बहिर्मननम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the thinking of them as outside. bahis (बहि) is outside. manana (मनन) is thinking. |
The phrases
Pleasure and pain are thought as outside. Genitive dual, then a nominative.
Sanskrit in this line
sukha (सुख) and duḥkha (दुःख) form a dual dvandva. The ending yoḥ (योः) is genitive and locative dual. Before b (ब्), visarga is already resolved in yoḥ (योः) to the vowel form the dual wears, and the recited line shows yor (योर्) before the voiced b (ब्).
Say it back
Say the dual, then say where the thinking places them.
