Break rut — uke loop cells
When island, folk, and fingerpicking are honest but the hands still play yesterday’s shapes, these eight loop cells are the reset. Pick one, loop until the motion is a twitch, then stop. No target tempo — the click is a floor, not a race.
Technique path: Drills · Exercises · Island / Folk / Fingerpicking first · this page when stale
Each card has pedagogy, TAB (A string on top — see Foundations · TAB), and Play. One model at a time; Play becomes Stop. Tempo follows the metronome. Models are slow and repeat the cell so you can hear the join before you speed up on your own.
Suggested order
- Uneven island
- Ghost &s
- Mute chick
- Campanella roll
- Thumb independence
- Thumb vs fingers
- Chord-melody cell
- Chord-melody fill
Beginner
Uneven island and ghost &s only. Hold C. Stay near 60.
Intermediate
Mute chick, campanella roll, thumb independence. Look at the right hand for one of them.
Advanced
Thumb vs fingers, then one chord-melody cell. One cell a day.
The eight cells
1 · Uneven island
Standard island is D–DU–UDU. Here beat 3 is a held downstroke (no up on that &), so the pattern limps on purpose: D–DU–D–DU. Hold C. The habit you break is mechanical evenness.
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & C ↓ ↓ ↑ ↓ ↓ ↑ A|----------------- E|----------------- C|-0-----0--0--0-----0--0-- hold C shape G|----------------- D D U D D U (no up on 3 &)
Deeper island map: Strumming · Island.
2 · Ghost &s
Downstrokes on the beats ring; every & is a left-hand mute (ghost). Same island-shaped hand path, but the offs are percussive x. Hold C.
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & A|----x-----x-----x-----x-- E|----x-----x-----x-----x-- ghost C|-0-----0-----0-----0----- ring downs G|-------------------------
3 · Mute chick
Folk boom-chick with a dead chick: bass rings on 1 and 3; 2 and 4 are muted brushes on E / A. Hold G. Twin of the dead-string idea on Folk drills — here it is the whole loop cell.
1 2 3 4 A|-------x-----------x-- E|-------x-----------x-- C|---------------------- G|-0-----------0-------- p mute chick
4 · Campanella roll
One pitch colour, cascading open / fretted notes so each attack rings over the last (campanella). C major seed: open C, E, A, then G fret 0 — let them overlap. No damping between notes.
A|-------------0--- E|---------0------- C|-----0----------- G|-0--------------- let each ring roll low → high, then reverse
Fingerstyle twin: Fingerpicking · classical depth on Classical drills.
5 · Thumb independence
Thumb owns open G on every beat. Index and middle answer on E and A on the offs only. Hold the open C colour in the left hand (or fretted C). The thumb must not rush when the fingers play.
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & A|--------0-----------0-- m E|-----0-----------0----- i C|----------------------- G|-0-------0-------0----- p
6 · Thumb vs fingers
Same split, harder join: thumb keeps quarters on C (lowest pitch); fingers play a small three-note cell on A (frets 0–2–3) that does not line up with every thumb hit. Count both layers out loud once.
thumb C|-0-------0-------0-------0---| fingers A|-0---2---3---2---0---2---3---2-| E|------------------------------- G|-------------------------------
7 · Chord-melody cell
Hold C, then Am. On each chord: bass (thumb) once, then a short melody on the A string (C: 3–0; Am: 0–3). Chord tones only — enough for a singable fill, not a solo box.
C Am A|-----3---0------------------0---3-- E|----------------------------------- C|-0-----------0----------0---------- G|----------------------------------- p melody p melody
8 · Chord-melody fill
One bar of G (bass + A-string 2–3–2), one bar of C (bass + A-string 3–0), back to G. Keep the right-hand order: thumb, then two or three melody notes. No strum in the middle.
G C G A|-----2---3---2-------3---0-----------2-- E|---------------------------------------- C|---------------------------------------- G|-0---------------0---------------0------ fill under the chord, not over it
Practice note
How long: 8–10 minutes. One wake-up, one break-rut cell for most of the time, then a phrase on Play along or Improv so the twitch turns into music.
Listen for: contrast (ring vs mute), overlapping campanella sustain, and a thumb that does not panic when the fingers move.
Common mistake: stacking all eight in one sitting. That is a new rut.
