Vijñāna Bhairava (विज्ञान भैरव)
शक्तिशक्तिमतोर् यद्वदभेदः सर्वदा स्थितः ।
अतस् तद्धर्मधर्मित्वात् परा शक्तिः परात्मनः śaktiśaktimator yadvad abhedaḥ sarvadā sthitaḥ |
atas taddharmadharmitvāt parā śaktiḥ parātmanaḥ
The line
Just as śakti (शक्ति) and the possessor of śakti (शक्ति) stand always without difference, therefore, because property and bearer are that, the supreme śakti (शक्ति) belongs to the supreme self.
नेपालीमा
शक्ति र शक्तिमान् जसरी सधैँ अभेद छन्, त्यसरी नै धर्म र धर्मको धारक अभिन्न भएकाले परा शक्ति परमात्माकी हो।
Where it sits
21 will say Śiva (शिव) is known by śakti (शक्ति), as a lamp is known by its light.
Split: śaktiśaktimatoḥ (शक्तिशक्तिमतोः) + yadvat (यद्वत्) + abhedaḥ (अभेदः) + sarvadā (सर्वदा) + sthitaḥ (स्थितः) + atas (अत) + taddharmadharmitvāt (तद्धर्मधर्मित्वात्) + parā (परा) + śaktiḥ (शक्तिः) + parātmanaḥ (परात्मनः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| śaktiśaktimatoḥ (शक्तिशक्तिमतोः) | genitive dual, or locative dual | of śakti (शक्ति) and of the one who possesses śakti (शक्ति). The dual ending oḥ (ओः) holds the pair. Recited śaktimator (शक्तिमतोर्) before y (य्). |
| yadvat (यद्वत्) | indeclinable | just as. |
| abhedaḥ (अभेदः) | nominative singular, masculine | non-difference. bheda (भेद) is division. a (अ) takes it away. |
| sarvadā (सर्वदा) | indeclinable | always. |
| sthitaḥ (स्थितः) | nominative singular, masculine | standing. Agrees with abhedaḥ (अभेदः). |
| atas (अत) | indeclinable | therefore. |
| taddharmadharmitvāt (तद्धर्मधर्मित्वात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of being the property and the bearer of the property. dharma (धर्म) is the property. dharmin (धर्मिन्) is the one who has it. tva (त्व) is the abstract. āt (आत्) is the ablative. |
| parā (परा) | nominative singular, feminine | supreme. |
| śaktiḥ (शक्तिः) | nominative singular, feminine | śakti (शक्ति). |
| parātmanaḥ (परात्मनः) | genitive singular, masculine | of the supreme self. |
The phrases
The dual names a pair and then says their abhedaḥ (अभेदः) always stands. The ablative taddharmadharmitvāt (तद्धर्मधर्मित्वात्) is the reason. parā śaktiḥ (परा शक्तिः) belongs to parātmanaḥ (परात्मनः).
Sanskrit in this line
A dual in oḥ (ओः) is one ending for two. Do not read śakti (शक्ति) and śaktimat (शक्तिमत्) as two separate cases.
Say it back
Name the pair, and say what the verse says stands between them.
