अनुभूतविषयासंप्रमोषः स्मृतिः

anubhūta-viṣayāsaṃpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ

The line

Memory is the not-losing of an object that was experienced.

स्मृति भोगिएको विषय नगुमाउनु हो।

Where it sits

This closes the list opened in 1.6. All five activities are now named and bounded. The next line leaves description and says how their stilling happens. Notice that memory is not treated as the enemy of practice. It is one of the five activities. Later, at 1.43, a purified memory is part of how a subtler samādhi (समाधि) is described. That line is not this lesson. The point here is only that memory is a vṛtti (वृत्ति).

Split: anubhūta-viṣaya-asaṃpramoṣaḥ (अनुभूतविषयअसंप्रमोषः) + smṛtiḥ (स्मृतिः)

smṛtiḥ (स्मृतिः)nominative singular, femininememory. The fifth of the five.

The phrases

smṛtiḥ (स्मृतिः) is the subject.

anubhūtaviṣayāsaṃpramoṣaḥ (अनुभूतविषयासंप्रमोषः) is the predicate, read from the end: a not-losing (asaṃpramoṣa (असंप्रमोष)) of an object (viṣaya (विषय)) that was experienced (anubhūta (अनुभूत)). The seam viṣaya (विषय) + asaṃpramoṣa (असंप्रमोष) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ).

smṛti (स्मृति) is feminine and asaṃpramoṣa (असंप्रमोष) is masculine. You saw this pattern in 1.7. Each noun keeps its own gender. The line still says memory is that not-losing.

Memory depends on a prior experience. That is what anubhūta (अनुभूत) locks in. Without something having been experienced, there is nothing for memory to keep. Sleep can be remembered because sleep was an experience, which is the link back to 1.10.

Sanskrit in this line

No new sandhi. Use a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ) on purpose, out loud, at the joint viṣayāsaṃpramoṣa (विषयासंप्रमोष).

The privative a- (अ) is doing the same work it did in akliṣṭa (अक्लिष्ट). saṃpramoṣa (संप्रमोष) would be the losing. asaṃpramoṣa (असंप्रमोष) is the not-losing. Memory is defined as a negation: the experience did not slip.

Say it back

Recite 1.6, then give the definition-word for each of the five: pramāṇa (प्रमाण), viparyaya (विपर्यय), vikalpa (विकल्प), nidrā (निद्रा), smṛti (स्मृति). One phrase each, from these lessons, not from memory of a commentary.
