1.19
भवप्रत्ययो विदेहप्रकृतिलयानाम्
bhava-pratyayo videha-prakṛti-layānām
The line
For the bodiless, and for those dissolved into prakṛti (प्रकृति), it comes from becoming.
नेपालीमा
विदेहहरूका लागि र प्रकृतिमा लीन भएकाका लागि त्यो भवबाट आउँछ।
Where it sits
1.18 named the other samādhi (समाधि) as the fruit of practice. This line names people for whom something like it comes without that practice. 1.20 turns back to the others, the ones who do practice.
Split: bhava (भव) + pratyayaḥ (प्रत्ययः) + videha (विदेह) + prakṛti (प्रकृति) + layānām (लयानाम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| bhava (भव) | stem | becoming. Birth, the coming-into-being that is not this practice. |
| pratyayaḥ (प्रत्ययः) | nominative singular, masculine | whose cause is that. For these people the samādhi (समाधि) comes from becoming, not from the practice just named. |
| videha (विदेह) | stem | bodiless. Those who have left the body and not yet gone further. |
| prakṛti (प्रकृति) | stem | nature, prakṛti (प्रकृति). Here, those dissolved into it. |
| layānām (लयानाम्) | genitive plural of laya (लय) | of those who have dissolved. The ending covers both groups. |
The phrases
bhava-pratyayaḥ (भवप्रत्ययः) is a description of the other samādhi (समाधि) from 1.18, still in force. Its cause is becoming. pratyayaḥ (प्रत्ययः) before the voiced v (व्) of videha (विदेह) is recited pratyayo (प्रत्ययो).
videha-prakṛti-layānām (विदेहप्रकृतिलयानाम्) is genitive plural: of the bodiless, and of those dissolved into prakṛti (प्रकृति). The line does not praise this route. It says there is a samādhi (समाधि) that arrives because of what one has become, and names whose it is.
Sanskrit in this line
The new ending is the genitive plural -ānām (आनाम्), “of the many.” One ending on laya (लय) serves the whole compound videha-prakṛti-laya (विदेहप्रकृतिलय). You already know aḥ (अः) before a voiced consonant becomes o (ओ), which is why pratyayaḥ videha (प्रत्ययः विदेह) is pratyayo videha (प्रत्ययो विदेह).
Say it back
Point at -ānām (आनाम्) and say whose samādhi (समाधि) this line is talking about. Two groups, one ending.
