Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tat (तत्) | nominative singular, neuter | that. The praṇava (प्रणव) of 1.27. |
| japaḥ (जपः) | nominative singular, masculine | repetition. Saying it again. |
| tat (तत्) | stem | that same sound, inside the next compound. |
| artha (अर्थ) | stem | the meaning. What the sound signifies, which 1.24–1.26 began to say. |
| bhāvanam (भावनम्) | nominative singular, neuter | contemplation. Letting that meaning become the shape of the mind. |
The phrases
The line is two nominatives set side by side, and both are the practice. taj-japaḥ (तज्जपः) is repetition of that. tad-artha-bhāvanam (तदर्थभावनम्) is contemplation of its meaning. Neither replaces the other.
Before the j (ज्) of japa (जप), the final t (त्) of tat (तत्) becomes j (ज्), so you hear taj-japas (तज्जपस्). The ḥ (ः) of japaḥ (जपः) before the t (त्) of the next tat (तत्) becomes s (स्): japas tad (जपस् तद्). You have met aḥ (अः) before a voiceless consonant since 1.2.
Sanskrit in this line
The new sandhi is dental t (त्) meeting j (ज्). tat japaḥ (तत् जपः) is said taj japaḥ (तज् जपः). A final t (त्) takes the place of the following sound when that sound is a palatal. The s (स्) in japas tad (जपस् तद्) is the old visarga rule, aḥ (अः) before t (त्).
Say it back
Do both aloud: taj-japaḥ (तज्जपः), then tad-artha-bhāvanam (तदर्थभावनम्). Hear the j (ज्) where tat (तत्) meets japa (जप).
Next
