विषयवती वा प्रवृत्तिरुत्पन्ना मनसः स्थितिनिबन्धनी

viṣayavatī vā pravṛttir utpannā manasaḥ sthiti-nibandhanī

The line

Or an arisen activity that carries a sense object, and that binds the mind to steadiness.

नेपालीमा

अथवा विषय बोकेर उठेको वृत्तिले चित्तलाई स्थिरतामा बाँध्छ।

Where it sits

Another vā (वा). Where 1.34 used the breath, this uses a mental activity that still has an object. The object is not the problem. An activity with a clear object can be what holds the mind.

Split: viṣayavatī (विषयवती) + vā (वा) + pravṛttiḥ (प्रवृत्तिः) + utpannā (उत्पन्ना) + manasaḥ (मनसः) + sthiti (स्थिति) + nibandhanī (निबन्धनी)

The phrases

The nominatives are feminine and they agree: viṣayavatī (विषयवती), pravṛttiḥ (प्रवृत्तिः), utpannā (उत्पन्ना), nibandhanī (निबन्धनी). An arisen activity that carries an object is what binds the mind to steadiness.

pravṛttiḥ (प्रवृत्तिः) before the vowel of utpannā (उत्पन्ना) is recited pravṛttir (प्रवृत्तिर्). iḥ (इः) before a vowel becomes ir (इर्), the same family as iḥ (इः) before a voiced consonant in 1.10.

Sanskrit in this line

The new sandhi is iḥ (इः) before a vowel: pravṛttiḥ utpannā (प्रवृत्तिः उत्पन्ना) is said pravṛttir utpannā (प्रवृत्तिरुत्पन्ना). And a row of feminine nominatives is agreement. If the noun is pravṛttiḥ (प्रवृत्तिः), the adjectives do not switch to masculine to “match the yogin.” They match the noun.

Say it back

Find every feminine word in the line and say them as one agreement: they all describe pravṛttiḥ (प्रवृत्तिः).
