तज्जः संस्कारोऽन्यसंस्कारप्रतिबन्धी
taj-jaḥ saṃskāro 'nya-saṃskāra-pratibandhī
The line
The impression born of that insight blocks the other impressions.
नेपालीमा
त्यस प्रज्ञाबाट जन्मेको संस्कारले अरू संस्कारलाई छेक्छ।
Where it sits
1.48 named an insight. Every insight leaves an impression, and an impression is a seed. This line is honest about that. The impression is useful: it blocks the others. 1.51 will say that even this impression is finally stilled.
Split: tat (तत्) + jaḥ (जः) + saṃskāraḥ (संस्कारः) + anya (अन्य) + saṃskāra (संस्कार) + pratibandhī (प्रतिबन्धी)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tat (तत्) | stem | that. The truth-bearing insight. |
| jaḥ (जः) | nominative singular, masculine | born. Born of that insight. |
| saṃskāraḥ (संस्कारः) | nominative singular, masculine | the impression. What the insight leaves in the mind. |
| anya (अन्य) | stem | other. |
| saṃskāra (संस्कार) | stem | impression. The other ones, from ordinary knowing. |
| pratibandhī (प्रतिबन्धी) | nominative singular of pratibandhin (प्रतिबन्धिन्) | blocking. It holds the others back. |
The phrases
taj-jaḥ saṃskāraḥ (तज्जः संस्कारः) is “the impression born of that.” tat (तत्) + ja (ज) is taj-ja (तज्ज), the same t (त्) before a palatal you heard in taj-japas (तज्जपस्). The impression of this insight is itself a saṃskāra (संस्कार). Seedless has not arrived yet.
anya-saṃskāra-pratibandhī (अन्यसंस्कारप्रतिबन्धी) says what that impression does. It blocks the other impressions. saṃskāraḥ anya (संस्कारः अन्य) is recited saṃskāro 'nya (संस्कारोऽन्य). pratibandhī (प्रतिबन्धी) is the nominative of a stem in -in (इन्), the same -ī (ई) as anupātī (अनुपाती) in 1.9.
Sanskrit in this line
-ja (ज) at the end of a compound means “born of.” taj-jaḥ (तज्जः) is born of that. And a stem in -in (इन्) still makes nominative -ī (ई): pratibandhin (प्रतिबन्धिन्) becomes pratibandhī (प्रतिबन्धी), not pratibandhiḥ (प्रतिबन्धिः). You learned the pattern on anupātī (अनुपाती). This is the same pattern on a new word.
Say it back
Say what is born, and what it blocks. Hear taj (तज्), not tat (तत्), at the joint.

1.51. When even that is stilled, because everything is stilled, samādhi is without seed.
