Where it sits

2.10 and 2.11 were how affliction is let go. This line is what affliction does if it stays: it roots a store of action, and that store ripens across births. 2.13 will say what the ripening consists of.

Split: kleśa (क्लेश) + mūlaḥ (मूलः) + karma (कर्म) + āśayaḥ (आशयः) + dṛṣṭa (दृष्ट) + adṛṣṭa (अदृष्ट) + janma (जन्म) + vedanīyaḥ (वेदनीयः)

The phrases

kleśa-mūlaḥ karmāśayaḥ (क्लेशमूलः कर्माशयः) is “the store of action, rooted in the afflictions.” karma (कर्म) + āśaya (आशय) is a (अ) + ā (आ) = ā (आ). Two masculine nominatives: the store is one whose root is affliction.

dṛṣṭādṛṣṭa-janma-vedanīyaḥ (दृष्टादृष्टजन्मवेदनीयः) says when it is felt: in a birth that is seen or in one not yet seen. dṛṣṭa (दृष्ट) + adṛṣṭa (अदृष्ट) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). The gerundive vedanīya (वेदनीय) means “to be experienced,” not “already experienced.”

Sanskrit in this line

A second gerundive, -anīya (अनीय), same job as heya (हेय): “to be done, to be felt.” And a (अ) + ā (आ) = ā (आ) in karmāśaya (कर्माशय). The compound dṛṣṭādṛṣṭa (दृष्टादृष्ट) is a dvandva, “seen and not seen,” the pattern of kliṣṭākliṣṭa (क्लिष्टाक्लिष्ट) in 1.5.

Say it back

Say what is rooted in the afflictions, and the two births in which it is to be felt.

Next

2.13. While the root remains, its ripening is type of birth, span of life, and experience.
