द्रष्टा दृशिमात्रः शुद्धोऽपि प्रत्ययानुपश्यः

draṣṭā dṛśi-mātraḥ śuddho 'pi pratyayānupaśyaḥ

The line

The seer is seeing only; pure, and yet looking on according to the ideas presented.

नेपालीमा

द्रष्टा देख्नु मात्र हो, शुद्ध छ, तर अघि राखिएका प्रत्ययअनुसार हेरिरहन्छ।

Where it sits

2.18 and 2.19 were the seen. This is the seer of 1.3, now in a full definition. Pure seeing, and still looking along with ideas: both halves are the doctrine. Drop the “yet” and the joining of 2.17 has no seer-side. 2.21 will say the seen exists for this seer.

Split: draṣṭā (द्रष्टा) + dṛśi (दृशि) + mātraḥ (मात्रः) + śuddhaḥ (शुद्धः) + api (अपि) + pratyaya (प्रत्यय) + anupaśyaḥ (अनुपश्यः)

The phrases

draṣṭā dṛśi-mātraḥ (द्रष्टा दृशिमात्रः) says the seer is seeing only. śuddhaḥ api (शुद्धः अपि) is “pure, and yet,” recited śuddho 'pi (शुद्धोऽपि). The purity is real. The yet is also real.

pratyayānupaśyaḥ (प्रत्ययानुपश्यः) is the yet: the seer looks on according to the ideas. pratyaya (प्रत्यय) + anupaśya (अनुपश्य) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). The seer does not become the idea. It sees along with the idea that is presented. That is the joining, from the seer's side.

Sanskrit in this line

The nominative of draṣṭṛ (द्रष्टृ) is draṣṭā (द्रष्टा), not draṣṭaḥ (द्रष्टः). Agent nouns in -tṛ (तृ) take -tā (ता) in the nominative singular. You have been seeing the genitive draṣṭuḥ (द्रष्टुः) since 1.3. This is the subject form. And aḥ (अः) + a (अ) once more: śuddho 'pi (शुद्धोऽपि).

Say it back

Say the two halves and do not skip api (अपि): seeing only, pure, and yet looking on.
