The line
The levels of the guṇas (गुण) are the particular, the unparticular, the mark alone, and the unmarked.

गुणका तह विशेष, अविशेष, लिङ्ग मात्र र अलिङ्ग हुन्।
Where it sits
1.45 said the subtle object ends in the unmarked. This line places that word on a ladder. The seen of 2.18 is this whole ladder, not only the particular things the senses meet. 2.20 will turn to the seer, who is none of the four.
Split: viśeṣa (विशेष) + aviśeṣa (अविशेष) + liṅga (लिङ्ग) + mātra (मात्र) + aliṅgāni (अलिङ्गानि) + guṇa (गुण) + parvāṇi (पर्वाणि)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| viśeṣa (विशेष) | stem | the particular. Gross, differentiated things. |
| aviśeṣa (अविशेष) | stem | the unparticular. Subtle, not yet differentiated. |
| liṅga (लिङ्ग) | stem | the mark. The level that is only a mark of what is coming. |
| mātra (मात्र) | stem | only. liṅga-mātra (लिङ्गमात्र) is “the mark alone.” |
| aliṅgāni (अलिङ्गानि) | nominative plural, neuter | and the unmarked. The ending covers all four levels. |
| guṇa (गुण) | stem | the guṇas (गुण). |
| parvāṇi (पर्वाणि) | nominative plural of parvan (पर्वन्) | the levels, the joints. The stages of the guṇas (गुण). |
The phrases
Four levels, one neuter plural on the last: particular, unparticular, mark-alone, unmarked. mātra (मात्र) + aliṅga (अलिङ्ग) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). viśeṣa (विशेष) + aviśeṣa (अविशेष) is the same join, written viśeṣāviśeṣa (विशेषाविशेष).
guṇa-parvāṇi (गुणपर्वाणि) predicates what the four are: the levels of the guṇas (गुण). parvan (पर्वन्) “joint, level” makes its neuter plural parvāṇi (पर्वाणि). This is the map behind “subtle” and “unmarked” in 1.45.
Sanskrit in this line
Neuter plural -āni (आनि) again, on a list. aliṅga (अलिङ्ग) is a- (अ) plus liṅga (लिङ्ग), “without mark,” the privative you know. parvāṇi (पर्वाणि) is a form to learn as a form: the plural of parvan (पर्वन्) is not parvāni (पर्वानि) with a short a (अ). The vowel strengthens to parvāṇi (पर्वाणि).
Say it back
Recite the four levels from gross to unmarked. The last is aliṅga (अलिङ्ग).
