Then, when the subsided idea and the arisen idea are equal, that is the mind's transformation into one-pointedness.

Where it sits

The third transformation. 3.13 says these three changes explain how elements and senses change. 3.15 will say a different sequence is a different change. Then 3.16 applies saṃyama (संयम) to the three changes and gets knowledge of past and future.

Split: tataḥ (ततः) + punaḥ (पुनः) + śānta (शान्त) + uditau (उदितौ) + tulya (तुल्य) + pratyayau (प्रत्ययौ) + cittasya (चित्तस्य) + ekāgratā (एकाग्रता) + pariṇāmaḥ (परिणामः)

The phrases

Then, again, when the subsided idea and the arisen idea are equal, that is the mind's transformation into one-pointedness. śānta (शान्त) + udita (उदित) is a (अ) + u (उ) = o (ओ), recited śāntoditau (शान्तोदितौ). cittasya (चित्तस्य) + ekāgratā (एकाग्रता) is a (अ) + e (ए) = ai (ऐ), recited cittasyaikāgratā (चित्तस्यैकाग्रता).

One-pointedness is not a frozen single idea. It is the quiet in which the idea that just subsided and the idea now present have equal weight. The mind is not lurching.

Sanskrit in this line

Two sandhis you know, both easy to miss because the line is long. a (अ) + u (उ) = o (ओ) in śāntodita (शान्तोदित). a (अ) + e (ए) = ai (ऐ) in cittasyaikāgra (चित्तस्यैकाग्र). Dual -au (औ) marks the pair of ideas. Find the duals before you translate.

Say it back

Find both dual endings. They are the pair the line is built on.
