jāti-lakṣaṇa-deśair anyatānavacchedāt tulyayos tataḥ pratipattiḥ
The line
From that, recognition of two similars, because their difference is not cut out by class, mark, or place.
नेपालीमा
त्यसबाट दुई उस्तैको पहिचान हुन्छ, किनकि तिनीहरूको भेद जाति, लक्षण वा ठाउँले काटिँदैन।
Where it sits
What vivekajaṃ jñānam (विवेकजं ज्ञानम्) is for. 3.54 will describe it from the inside: every object, every mode, no sequence, and liberating. 3.55 then defines aloneness as the sameness of two purities.
Split: jāti (जाति) + lakṣaṇa (लक्षण) + deśaiḥ (देशैः) + anyatā (अन्यता) + anavacchedāt (अनवच्छेदात्) + tulyayoḥ (तुल्ययोः) + tataḥ (ततः) + pratipattiḥ (प्रतिपत्तिः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| jāti (जाति) | stem | class, kind. |
| lakṣaṇa (लक्षण) | stem | mark. |
| deśaiḥ (देशैः) | instrumental plural | by place. The ending covers class, mark, and place. |
| anyatā (अन्यता) | stem | difference. |
| anavacchedāt (अनवच्छेदात्) | ablative singular | because the difference is not cut out. Those three do not separate them. |
| tulyayoḥ (तुल्ययोः) | genitive dual | of two similars. Of two that look the same. |
| tataḥ (ततः) | indeclinable | from that. From the knowledge of 3.52. |
| pratipattiḥ (प्रतिपत्तिः) | nominative singular, feminine | recognition. One tells them apart. |
The phrases
From that knowledge, recognition of two similars, because class, mark, and place do not cut their difference out. deśaiḥ (देशैः) is instrumental plural, “by” those three. anyatā (अन्यता) + anavaccheda (अनवच्छेद) is ā (आ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). tulyayoḥ (तुल्ययोः) is genitive dual.
When two things match in kind, in mark, and in place, ordinary knowing cannot say which is which. The knowledge born of discernment can.
Sanskrit in this line
Instrumental plural -aiḥ (ऐः), “by these,” as the things that fail to distinguish. Ablative -āt (आत्) as the because. Dual genitive for the two similars. The line is a small argument: because these do not separate them, the recognition comes from that other knowledge.
Say it back
Say why ordinary marks fail, then what succeeds. The success is pratipattiḥ (प्रतिपत्तिः).
