3.55
सत्त्वपुरुषयोः शुद्धिसाम्ये कैवल्यमिति
sattva-puruṣayoḥ śuddhi-sāmye kaivalyam iti
The line
When the purity of sattva and the purity of puruṣa (पुरुष) are the same, that is aloneness.
नेपालीमा
सत्त्वको शुद्धि र पुरुषको शुद्धि उस्तै भए त्यो कैवल्य हो।
Where it sits
The third pāda (पाद) ends where 3.50 pointed: not at the powers, at aloneness. The fourth pāda (पाद) will argue the point. Where powers come from, why a mind is not the seer, and how the guṇas (गुण) resolve when they have no further purpose.
Split: sattva (सत्त्व) + puruṣayoḥ (पुरुषयोः) + śuddhi (शुद्धि) + sāmye (साम्ये) + kaivalyam (कैवल्यम्) + iti (इति)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| sattva (सत्त्व) | stem | sattva. |
| puruṣayoḥ (पुरुषयोः) | genitive dual | of sattva and puruṣa (पुरुष). The same pair as 3.35. |
| śuddhi (शुद्धि) | stem | purity. |
| sāmye (साम्ये) | locative singular | when there is sameness. When the two purities are the same. |
| kaivalyam (कैवल्यम्) | nominative singular, neuter | aloneness. |
| iti (इति) | indeclinable | thus. The pāda (पाद) closes. |
The phrases
When the purity of sattva and the purity of puruṣa (पुरुष) are the same, that is aloneness. sāmye (साम्ये) is locative, the when. kaivalyam (कैवल्यम्) is the nominative. iti (इति) marks the close of the teaching of this pāda (पाद), the way a sentence ends.
3.35 said they are unmixed and that experience fails to tell them apart. This line does not mix them. It says their purities match. Aloneness is that match, not a fusion.
Sanskrit in this line
Locative sāmye (साम्ये), “when there is sameness,” and dual genitive for the two whose purity is compared. iti (इति) at the end of a pāda (पाद) is a close, not the “thus” that names a practice, as in 2.34. Here it simply ends.
Say it back
Close the pāda (पाद) with the sentence. Purity the same, aloneness. The powers are not in the sentence.
# Kaivalya-pāda (कैवल्यपाद)
The argument closes. Same form as the earlier sittings.
