कर्माशुक्लाकृष्णं योगिनस् त्रिविधमितरेषाम्

karmāśuklākṛṣṇaṃ yoginas tri-vidham itareṣām

The line

The yogin's action is neither white nor black. For others it is of three kinds.

नेपालीमा

योगीको कर्म सेतो पनि होइन, कालो पनि होइन। अरूका लागि त्यो तीन प्रकारको हुन्छ।

Where it sits

Action, which 2.12 stored up, is here divided by who does it. The yogin's action does not add to the white and black that ripen. 4.8 says only the impressions that match a ripening become manifest.

Split: karma (कर्म) + aśukla (अशुक्ल) + akṛṣṇam (अकृष्णम्) + yoginaḥ (योगिनः) + tri (त्रि) + vidham (विधम्) + itareṣām (इतरेषाम्)

The phrases

The yogin's action is neither white nor black. aśukla (अशुक्ल) + akṛṣṇa (अकृष्ण) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). yoginaḥ (योगिनः) is genitive, “for the yogin.” For the others, action is of three kinds. The three are not named. Tradition reads them as black, white, and mixed. The line says three, and stops.

Before tri (त्रि), yoginaḥ (योगिनः) is recited yoginas (योगिन), aḥ (अः) before t (त्).

Sanskrit in this line

Two privatives, a-śukla (अशुक्ल) and a-kṛṣṇa (अकृष्ण), one compound, one ending. Genitive yoginaḥ (योगिनः) is “of the yogin,” from a stem in -in (इन्). itareṣām (इतरेषाम्) is the genitive plural you learned in 1.20. The line is a contrast of two genitives.

Say it back

Say the yogin's action in the line's own negatives. Then the others.
