Practice routine — getting the sound
Short daily sessions beat long frustrated ones. Use the real bansuri clips as a target tone, then hunt that colour on your bamboo.
1 · Hear the target (1–2 min)
Play a long-tone sample pitched to your Sa, or a short real phrase for colour.
- Set the practice-bar Sa to a comfortable pitch (match your flute later — Eastern home fingering is top three holes covered; chart on Swaras).
- Press Play Sa. Hum that pitch. Remember the airy bamboo colour.
- Optional: play a phrase once — not to copy every note yet, only to hear a living bansuri.
2 · Daily block (15–20 min)
A · Body & straw (3 min)
Tall sit, soft shoulders, belly breath. Straw stream on the palm — steady, not loud. Details: straw drill.
B · Kiss-and-roll hunt (5–7 min)
Holes open. Soft air across the edge. Change one thing at a time (roll, lip cover, aperture). Max two minutes of frustration — then pause, replay Sa, try again. Guide: kiss-and-roll.
C · When a tone appears — lock it (5 min)
Hold 3–5 seconds. Rest. Repeat ten honest tones. Fingers can stay open at first. When the tone is repeatable, cover the top three holes for home Sa and match the drone (full map on Swaras).

D · Named notes — one hole at a time
Do not start Sa–Re–Ga drills here. First work through One hole at a time. Use fingering charts as the reference map (Pa forks, Ma, komal). Patterns and songs come after that.
3 · Week map
- Days 1–3 — Blocks A–B only. Success = any pitch under the hiss, even brief.
- Days 4–7 — Add C when you can repeat a tone. Match drone Sa (top three closed).
- Week 2 — Work One hole at a time through Pa; keep fingering charts open when you need a fork or half-hole. Stay off songs until Sa–Re–Ga feel honest.
- Week 3+ — Alankars and songs. Keep long tones every day.
Still no tone?
- Replay Sa, then straw on palm — is your stream thin enough?
- Checklist: first sound troubleshooting.
- Try an end-blown murali for a morale win — then return to side-blown embouchure.
- One live lesson beats ten angry hours alone.
