1.1.18

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.18

भेदव्यपदेशाच् च

bhedavyapadeśāc ca

The line

And because the text states a difference, the blissful one is not the individual soul.

र पाठले भेद बताएकाले आनन्दमय जीवात्मा होइन।

Where it sits

itaraḥ (इतरः) from 1.1.17 is still the one being set aside. The difference stated is inside the Taittirīya (तैत्तिरीय) bliss passage, not a new text.

Split: bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्) + ca (च)

bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause a difference is stated
ca (च)indeclinableand

The phrases

The Taittirīya (तैत्तिरीय) says he enjoys all desires together with the intelligent brahman (ब्रह्मन्). 'Together with' is a difference. The enjoyer and the one he is with are not the same grammatical person.

If ānandamaya (आनन्दमय) were only that enjoyer, the sentence would have no second term. ca adds this statement of difference to the unfitness in the previous line.

Sanskrit in this line

bheda-vyapadeśa (भेद-व्यपदेश) is 'the naming of a difference'. Before ca, t is heard as c.

Say it back

Remember the phrase 'together with the intelligent brahman (ब्रह्मन्)' as the difference this line uses.
