1.1.25

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.25

ज्योतिश् चरणाभिधानात्

jyotiś caraṇābhidhānāt

The line

The light is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्), because the text names feet.

नेपालीमा

ज्योति ब्रह्म हो, किनकि पाठले पाउको नाम लिन्छ।

Where it sits

A new word, jyotiḥ (ज्योतिः). brahman (ब्रह्मन्) from 1.1.1 is the predicate. The feet belong to the Gāyatrī- (गायत्री-)brahman (ब्रह्मन्) of this passage, which the next line's objection will try to reduce to a metre.

Split: jyotiḥ (ज्योतिः) + caraṇa-abhidhānāt (चरण-अभिधानात्)

The phrases

The passage is the Chāndogya (छान्दोग्य) Gāyatrī (गायत्री) that is all this, and the light that shines above heaven, on the back of all, the same light that is inside the person. Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) is said there with feet: the worlds stand as his quarters.

A physical light has no feet in that sense. caraṇa (चरण) is a foot. The naming of feet ties this light to the brahman (ब्रह्मन्) who is measured as the whole world, not to sunshine.

Sanskrit in this line

jyotiḥ (ज्योतिः) before c is recited jyotiś (ज्योतिश्). caraṇa-abhidhāna (चरण-अभिधान) is 'the naming of feet', neuter, ablative -āt (-आत्).

Say it back

Say where the light is: beyond heaven, and also within the person.

Next

1.1.26. The naming of a metre does not remove Brahman (ब्रह्मन्), because the text says to set the mind on that light.
